Daniel Freedenburg Obituary



Dr. Daniel J. Freedenburg Jr., 74, of Gibson Island, Maryland died peacefully on December 13, 2017. Dr. Freedenburg was born on October 28, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Davidson College in North Carolina, and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1965, thereafter earning his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland in 1969. Following graduation, he served residencies in Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, D.C. and Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also earned a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Science. He served as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service from 1969 to 1972. Following his service, Dan returned to Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland where he held various faculty and teaching positions in Psychiatry while also leading the Department of Psychiatry at Maryland General Hospital. Dan subsequently entered private medical practice and retired in 2010. Dan loved the fine arts, classical music and opera, and travelled extensively throughout many parts of the world. He was happiest when entertaining family and friends on Gibson Island. He is survived by his wife Gail S. Ennis and his son Daniel Jefferson Freedenburg III. A memorial service will be held in the spring.
