David Ludwig Obituary
On September 15, 2015, David Ludwig passed away peacefully at age 62 in the Gilchrist Hospice, Columbia, Maryland, after a long and valiant battle with tongue and throat cancer. Dr. Ludwig was a system ecologist by training, with particular interest in marine/estuarine ecosystems, invertebrate biology, urban ecology, and risk/impact assessment. Dr. Ludwig shared his passion for cooking, music, travel, literature and ecology with his wife Cathy Womack, and his 3 children: Molly, Jesse and Colin. Their traditional Thanksgiving weekends were legendary, as the family hosted numerous friends for epic food, drink and merriment. Dr. Ludwig is also survived by his sister Elizabeth, and brother Daniel. There will be no funeral services. Dr. Ludwig's life will be celebrated at a later date. His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in his name to the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Robinson Nature Center, 6692 Cedar Lane, Columbia, Maryland 21044 (middlepatuxent.org), where Dr. Ludwig especially enjoyed walking and taking photographs.

Dave was a great college roommate, and I will always remember our trip to Boulder/Estes Park in Colorado during a summer break at Rutgers. It was nice knowing Dave.

I just learned of the passing of Dr. Ludwig. As his roommate at Rutgers for three years I fondly remember an absolutely kind generous talented young man with a great sense of humor. My condolences to his family.

I remember Dave and Kathy from our graduate school days in the early 1980's at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Dave was a great cook then, and had a sincere love for science. My deepest condolences to Kathy and her family.
