Doris Neumann Obituary

NEUMANN , Doris M. On July 16, 2013 Doris Elaine McGlone Neumann, 93, at her home in Timonium, MD. Born Nov. 15, 1919 in Flint, MI, the youngest child of Ellen McLeod McGlone and Frank Eugene McGlone, the beloved wife of the late William Louis Neumann, and loving mother to sons Christopher Reid Neumann and Gregory Arnold Neumann, also devoted to four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by siblings Elno Duncan McGlone, Ronald Andrew McGlone, Milton Edgar McGlone, and Mildred Helen McGlone. Her warmth and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who knew her. After Flint Central High School, with scholarships and Works Progress Administration teaching jobs, Doris graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in history in 1941. Her graduate studies were interrupted by WWII, caring for parents and raising a family while teaching in Dearborn, MI and Claremont, CA. She settled in Washington, DC where her husband directed the Foundation for Foreign Affairs. In 1954 the Neumanns moved to Baltimore County where Dr. Neumann taught at Goucher College and Doris taught history and geography at Friends School of Baltimore from 1956 to 1985. Her Urban Geography curriculum took students from Baltimore's early history to the present, enriched by field trips to see neighborhood pride and the challenges of the changing economy. On June 1, 1984, Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer presented the City of Baltimore Citizen Citation to Doris M. Neumann in recognition of "28 years of outstanding accomplishments" in urban studies, instilling students with "immense pride in their city". Doris, in addition to being a magnet and host for an international circle of family and friends, was a dedicated worker for racial justice, fair housing, and international peace and friendship, e.g., demonstrating to desegregate the Washington, D.C. National Theater, and to end chemical, biological and radiological warfare preparations at Ft. Detrick, MD. She worked with the American Friends Service Committee, American Field Service, Baltimore Neighborhoods Inc., the Congress of Racial Equality, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and was a Board member of the McKim Community Center up to her death.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to McKim Community Association, 1120 East Baltimore St., Baltimore, MD, 21202, or Heifer International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202. A celebration of her full and generous life is planned for September 28, 2013 at the Stony Run Friends Meeting in Baltimore. Please call 717 456-7934 for particulars.

Doris was an inspiration to me both personally and professionally. She retired the year I started at Friends, yet she never stopped teaching! I marveled at her energy and stamina, and always enjoyed the lunches we shared with other Friends School faculty ladies. If I know Doris, I am sure she is guiding all of our dearly departed citizens in discovering Heaven's nooks, crannies, and
hidden corners... My condolences to the Neumann family; I am sure you miss this special lady.

As a young teacher I was fortunate to teach with Doris at Friends in 1972-1974. She had a great way of guiding and making suggestions: leading us to the right decision by gentle suggestion. How lucky I am that I knew her. I will miss her.

Doris Neumann was a great teacher, a woman who shared far more than simple facts with her students. She imparted to us all a passion for learning, as well as a humane sense of social justice. Her intelligence and integrity were deeply inspiring to me and my classmates at Friends School.

Thank you, Mrs. Neumann. My eternal gratitude to you, and prayers of condolence to your family.

I was fortunate to have Mrs. Neumann as a teacher at Friends in the 1960's. She was a wonderful, caring teacher. My thoughts are with her family.

Doris was a true warrior for truth and love. She was fiercely independent while maintaining close friendships wherever she had been or was. I miss her terribly, but know she is still in the world through her good works.

I knew Doris since 1993. She was my neighbor. We got really close the last six or seven years. She was an incredibly wonderful decent human being. We shared many conversations. She was an inspiration of spirit to me. I will miss her immeasurably.

Remembering Doris Neumann: she knew that I loved geography and swimming - so we studied maps during spare moments and she took me to the Goucher pool and to her home lap pool to swim many times. It was the first time I had been to a college campus (and probably one of the factors in why I ultimately went to school there!). I played tennis with Dr. Bill and his was the first death I ever experienced- many lessons then and since - rest well Doris - your legacy endures through all of us.

I am very sorry for your loss but know she lived a full and active life. Doris was warm and generous with her time and spirit to the children in the neighborhood as well. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.
