Edward Scicchitano Obituary

SCICCHITANO , Edward A. On September 16, 2012 Edward A. Scicchitano , 81, was at his home when he was suddenly called to eternal rest. Ed was born on October 16, 1930 in Mt. Carmel, PA. He was the son of the late Rosa (Varano) and Domenico Scicchitano. He was the youngest of four. Mr. Scicchitano began his illustrious career as a youth when he became a decorated Eagle Scout. After graduating from Mt. Carmel Catholic High School in 1948, Ed went on to earn his B.S. and Master's degrees in nuclear physics from the Pennsylvania State University. While in college, Ed participated in the ROTC program and after graduation achieved the rank of Captain while serving in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Europe. Ed became an engineer for the Martin Marietta Aerospace Division and helped plan some of NASA's operations in the Mercury and Gemini projects. He then became the founder and CEO of Dynatherm, a Research and Development Company based in Baltimore, MD. This company later merged with Thermacorp and Modine Manufacturing, an international corporation. Ed was an avid sports fan whose teams included Penn State, the Baltimore (Colts) Ravens and Baltimore Orioles. Ed's other interested included golf, bowling, and skiing and he traveled to several bowl games to cheer for his beloved alma mater. He was an outstanding tennis player with numerous Amateur Tennis Tournament wins. He was a member of the National Catholic Alumni Association and a third degree Knight of Columbus. Most importantly, Ed was a beloved son, brother and uncle who was highly regarded by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His gentle caring and advice has guided several generations of family members and his love and kindness will always be remembered. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Theresa and most recently, his sister, Rose Pitingolo. He will be sorely missed by his survivors, who include his sister Catherine of Audobon, PA; and nieces and nephews: Joanne and Rick DiFrancesco, Selinsgrove, PA; Joe Pitingolo, Jr., Emmaus, PA; Ed and Betsy Pitingolo of Harrisburg, PA; and Jim and Cathy Pitingolo of Berkely Heights, NJ; seven great-nieces and nephews also survive: Jenna DiFrancesco, Pittsburgh, PA; Alyssa DiFrancesco, Philadelphia, PA; Christian Pitingolo, Harrisburg, PA and Anna, Jimmy, Grace and Louis Pitingolo, Berkeley Heights, NJ. Ed was also the proud godfather of five and beloved cousin to many.
Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 11 AM in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Avenue, Mount Carmel, PA with Father Raymond Orloski officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, Twp. Viewing will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 with the Rosary at 8, and Saturday morning from 9 to 10:45 in the C.J. Lucas Funeral Home, Inc., 27 North Vine Street, Mount Carmel, PA, C.J. Lucas, IV, Supervisor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Kidney Foundation of Central PA, 4813 Jonestown Road #101, Harrisburg, PA, 17109 or the American Diabetes Association Central PA Region, 3544 N. I was fortunate to know Ed for more than 20 years through the Catholic Alumni Club in Baltimore. I will remember him always as a true gentleman and a caring, generous friend.
