I am a surgeon today because of Hans Wilhelmsen. We first met in late '69 when I was a junior medical student at the University of Maryland. He was a young very active plastic surgeon and literally took me under his wing.
For the duration of my medical school years, I was privileged to work with him on weekends and holidays. He taught me the art of surgery, gentle tissue technique, attention to detail, but most of all, the art of being a physician and surgeon...and how to communicate with patients.
When he built his office on campus at St. Jos, he showed me the office he planned for me, once I returned from training.
Sadly, that was not to be as during my general surgical training, I developed the passion for taking care of critically ill and cancer patients, and declined the plastic surgical program he had arranged for me in Pittsburgh.
My PA reminded me today that I still speak of his teaching and precepts when we are in the OR doing a case together.
Hans Wilhelmsen is alive and well not only in me but the countless numbers of surgeons I have played a part in training over the last 40-plus years!

Dr. Wilhelmsen treated me for several facial scars left from aggressive cystic acne when I was in my early 20s. I'll always be grateful for his care and optimism. At the time I was an aspiring physician. I was in awe of him. During one of my surgeries he told me that medical school was easy for him! It was not so for me, but I did manage to become a physician a few years later. He was a great surgeon and a wonderful role model for me. My sincere condolences to his family.

As a teenager in the '60's, I was a patient of Dr. Wilhelmsen. I've never forgotten his kindness.
