Harvey Kirstel Obituary

Harvey E. Kirstel died at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville,MD at the age of 90 after a year long illness. He is survived by his partner Jane Morais, his son Evan, daughter-in-law Irma, daughter Gillian Beckwith, son-in-law Kevin and grandchildren Hannah and Aidan Kirstel and Abby Beckwith, as well as, the Cummings and Abramson families.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1931. Harvey graduated from the High School of Music and Art and the Cooper Union. He earned a degree in architecture From the University of Cincinnati . He also studied at the Ruskin School in Oxford, England, Hunter College, and earned a MFA from the school of Fine Arts at University of Maryland.

After teaching art history at Towson University he chaired the art department at UMBC, retiring in 1995 to paint contemporary still life. He spent many years designing and building a cabin in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, where with his partner, Jane, he maintained a studio and was active in the arts community.

A memorial celebration will be held in the Charlestown Gallery on January 14, 2023 from 1pm-4pm, following an exhibition of paintings done in the last few months of his life.
