Jane Brown Michener

Jane Brown Michener a resident of Broadmead in Cockeysville, MD passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at the age of 95. She was a native of Philadelphia and graduate from Holy Angels Academy in New Jersey. She was one of the first woman in Maryland to receive a master's degree in Chemistry. She also held a second master's, in ESNL. She was a Sister of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Baltimore for 25 years and taught organic chemistry. While teaching at Notre Dame College Jane created programs to combat racism. This led to extensive training in organizational development focused on culture change and conflict management.

In the early 1970's she left the convent to start a fourteen-year career with the Baltimore County Public Schools as a specialist in staff and human relations. In 1970 Barbara Mikulski recommended Jane work with Nancy Geyer on race relations programs. The two met and were life partners for next 35 years. In the 1980's they both worked in the Philippines, Nepal, Fiji, and Romania supporting women in development programs with the Peace Corps and other organizations around the globe. Jane dedicated her life to improving race relations and was a pioneer of the civil rights movement starting in the 1950's continuing till her death.

She spent the last years of her life at Broadmead where she met, fell in love, and married John Michener in 2010. Jane loved life and loved learning. As a docent at the BMA she learned and taught about art into her 80's. She was an excellent listener with a sharp mind. Her compassion for and sincere interest in others inspired all to be the best version of themselves. Services will be held Nov. 5th 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Hunt Valley MD.
