John Fleishman Obituary

John Alan Fleishman departed this life on Monday, September 11, 2017 after a long illness. He was 69 years old. He is survived by his wife, Joan Cwi, and family and friends. Up until the end, he retained his biting sense of humor and love for his Boston teams. He worked as a research scientist at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for 25 years contributing significantly to the world of HIV health services. He was an ardent bird watcher, traveling extensively to see new species and experience new places. In the period of great adversity caused by his illness, he remained incredibly kind, generous, thankful and loving. He was cremated at the Cremation Society of Maryland and memorial services will be held in Baltimore MD and Narragansett RI in the upcoming month. Contributions in his name should be made to an environmental preservation society of your choice.

Years after working on the HIVRN project at JHH, a recent new opportunity came up, and I thought of how great of an interaction I had with John. I was saddened to read I couldn’t reach out to him, since he was the first person that came to my mind knowing what an honest, diligent, thoughtful person he was. He was always a great mentor-type person and always gave me great critical advice.

John and I were study buddies in graduate school. His sense of humor, kindness and companionship helped me through many of the inevitable crises that graduate school entails. I will miss his friendship in the years to come.

Joan, I'm grateful that he found such an enduring love with you. He was happy and fulfilled. I hope that your memories of him provide solace.

I just heard about John's passing. I worked with John at AHRQ providing programming support for some of his research. John always greeted you with a smile and a kind word. He was a brilliant and compassionate man who will be dearly missed. God bless.

John came to Brown University to work with me on a large health services research study focused on AIDS early in the time of the epidemic. He brought depth, rigor as well as fun and humor to a project that had us all guessing about how this new disease would affect the US and the world. Once the project was over he went to work at the government and continued to do research on how persons with HIV were treated. He made great contributions to the field while maintaining his humor and dignity. I'll miss him a lot. Vince

Joan I just heard through the grapevine. So sorry for your loss and for John's passing. My time working with him at Brown were some of the happiest in my career. He was a great man. Funny, analytically brilliant, and solid as a rock. John Piette

I've been a librarian at AHRQ for several years. I don't know of anyone who was friendlier or nicer than John. He'd drop off books he borrowed with a big smile and wave, and often times say something funny or chat for a couple minutes. He could brighten a dull day or life spirits with his big smile.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Dear Joan: My heart aches for you. I am so sorry for your loss. John was a dear colleague and a cherished friend. Some of my best memories of AHCPR involve John: either working with him on a paper, getting professional advice or going to lunch with him and Bill at Ambrosia for the Wednesday special. Such a beautiful person, so generous with his time and wisdom. And the best duck noises ever-- John delighted Ingram with his duck calls.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.
