John Gerard Jolly

JOLLY , John Gerard JOHN GERARD JOLLY of Glen Rock, PA died peacefully at home on May 28th, 2011 at the age of 76 after a brave struggle with cancer. The son of John Gerard Jolly, Sr. and his wife Annamae, Mr. Jolly was born in 1934 in Brooklyn NY. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and then worked at the Brooklyn Naval Yard while attending St. John's University in Queens, NY. After graduating from St. John's in 1958, Mr. Jolly moved to Washington, DC to take a position as a cryptologist with the National Security Agency. During a career which spanned 36 years he rose through a variety of technical and management positions, retiring as a Senior Executive in 1994. Mr. Jolly was a charter member of the Senior Cryptologic Executive Service and a recipient of both the Meritorious and Exceptional Civilian Service Awards. He was a 1990 recipient of the Presidential Rank Award from then President George H. W. Bush. Mr. Jolly lived in Severna Park, MD for over twenty years and was very active in Optimist International, serving as an officer of clubs in both Maryland and Pennsylvania. As an avid golfer and member of the Caledonia Clowns golf group he was known for his long backswing and dry wit. He also enjoyed bridge, chess, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence Jolly; three children: John S Jolly of Highland, MD; Anne M Gustke of Bridgeport, NY, and Beth L Jolly of Baltimore, MD. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Grace, Eleanor and Robert Gustke; Joy, Kirsten, Katrina and John G Jolly III. He is also survived by two sisters: Helen Staab of Lodi, NJ and Maryann Redican of Indian Trail, NC.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (Historic Church), 315 N. Constitution Ave New Freedom, PA. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in New Freedom immediately following. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday from 6 PM - 8 PM at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St, New Freedom, PA. Memorial donations may be made to the York Cancer Center 25 Monument Road, York PA 17403
