John Katz Obituary

On May 26, 2002, JOHN ZADOCK KATZ, passed on at home after a valiant 15 year struggle with kidney cancer. Beloved husband of Dorothy Ann Kurilla of Jessup, PA and father of John Andrew and Walter, who left us August 4, 1996. Also survived by two sisters and their husbands, Deborah and Howard T. Hermann of Newtonville, MA and Mary S. and W. Richard Burack of Jackson, NH and 16 nieces and nephews. Born in Baltimore, MD on December 30, 1928 to the late Amalie Sonneborn Katz and M. Shakman Katz. Graduated from The Park School, Baltimore (1946), Haverford College (1950), and Harvard Business School (1958). Interned in the oil business in London for one year after college and then enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War for three years. Honorably discharged from the Army Security Agency as a Sergeant (1954). After Business School, worked for several years in family oil business, L. Sonneborn Sons, Inc. In 1962, began as a Security Analyst in The Equity Research Department of Burnham and Company and became a firm partner in 1971. The firm later became Drexel, Burnham, Lambert, Inc. Eventually became Department Manager and then Associate Director of Research and remained with the firm until its demise in 1990. The following two years served as a Supervisor Analyst in the Institutional Research Department of Kidder Peabody & Co. Member of Board of Trustees of the New York Society for Ethical Culture from 1972 to 1997 and Treasurer from 1979 to 1986. On Board of Governors of the Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools from 1976 to 1986, and member of The Board of Mount Pleasant Westchester Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY from 1972 to 2000. Memorial contributions may be made to The Kidney Cancer Association, 1234 Sherman Avenue, Suite 203, Evanston, IL 60202-1375. A Funeral Service will be held at The Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel at 1076 Madison Avenue at East 81st Street, New York City on Friday, May 31, 2002, at 11:30 A.M.
