Over 20 years ago I sold Karl an Eclair NPR 16mm camera. We lost touch and I never spoke to him again. I hope he made good use of it and turned out fun film projects. If the family wants to sell it back to me I'd be honoured. That is why I tried to see him again, the last thing I expected was to find this great guy gone. Rest In Peace, Karl

I'd like to extend our deepest condolences to Karl's family. I'd known Karl for over ten years as a professional; I was always cheered to find out that he was on a crew. He had a singular way of making people laugh; and I was certainly not immune to his infectious humor. He balanced the humor with professionalism; he was absolutely wonderful to be around. One of the finest people I'd ever met. He'll be sorely missed.

DeVos Family,
I am just learning of Karl's passing and have been stopped in my tracks ever since. Rarely does a person enter your life with a spirit so kind and warming that you immediately welcome them in. I worked, carpooled and laughed with Karl many times over the past several years and always looked forward to our interactions. Your loss is felt by many...he was quite a special man.

The last time I spent any time with Karl was at an Open Bible Men's retreat. He and Bill and I played monopoly with a couple other people until about 2 in the morning. At some point we all started cheating prolifically and it was a blast. The biggest thing I learned from him was to be serious about doing things right without being serious. He had fun and got alot done at the same time. The fact that I can't tell him that now has given me a new sense of purpose of being intentional about affirming others.

Dear Jennifer and family,
Tom and I and the whole GBC church family will greatly miss Karl. He was a vital part of our Sunday School class and gatherings and especially in the audiovisual ministry at GBC. He gave of himself through time, effort, and talent as God had gifted him, and you will never know how he touched so many lives with his kind actions and words. And, Jen, you were right there supporting Karl through it all. I'll never forget when first meeting Karl at one of your open house events how he got my Ford pickup truck 'unstuck' from the rut I created in your front lawn! I appreciated the many times he helped me practice for special music selections. Our classroom setting on Sunday mornings will not be the same without Karl, but we know he is in the presence of our Lord. May God give you strength and peace for all your future days. Please know we are here for you. Continued prayers of love and care.

Whenever I walked into a tv control room and saw that Karl was on the crew it made me happy - the level of professionalism and talent that he brought to the job was unsurpassed - he was always most generous & patient whenever I asked questions -his work ethic was an example of what we all should strive for - and most memorably, the many conversations I had with Karl showed him to be an extraordinarily genuine and compassionate human being - his passing is a great loss to all who knew him.
My deepest sympathies to his wife and family in their sorrow.

To those who loved Karl,
We did not know Karl personally. We have only been at Gunpowder a little while, however, we do know great loss, and intense grief for a few years now. There is no survival thru such heartache without clutching the Saviour's hand each moment. There is no other journey except thru the tunnel, but our sweet heavenly Father walks beside and comforts like none other, gently applying the balm of Gilead to each painful emotion. We will be thinking of you and praying for you. And remember, we will see Karl again!
December 16, 2009
I never had the pleasure of meeting Karl, but after reading all of the beautiful, heartfelt expressions of sympathy....my goodness...he must have been quite a special, special person. How tragic that his life was cut so short. I can't imagine the heartache his family will feel forever. And it is especially sad at this time of the year when hearts should be filled with the joy and celebration of Christmas. Karl's Christmas will be heavenly, but I know his family's will be very difficult. I hope you are able to find comfort in your faith. The Hohenstein family

Jennifer and Family: Karl and I shot the Skipjack Races together on Labor Day for a documentary we're producing. In typical Karl fashion, he was the consummate professional, always at the right place at the right time -- doing whatever needed to be done to get it right. It was a couple of long days, but we shared some good laughs and really enjoyed the characters we were studying that weekend.
I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear about Karl, and I'm going to miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I honestly haven't known Karl very long (4-5 yrs), but whenever he came into our studios he always made me feel like I was working with an old friend. His easy and disarming smile made for a very relaxed atmosphere and he was as pleasant a person as I've ever known. Karl was a consummate pro whose love for his craft was self-evident. He'll be dearly and sorely missed here in the CMS studios. I am still stunned to think of his passing so soon, but I am thankful for having met and worked with him however brief it may have been. I know my life's experience is richer for it and his spirit will always live in my memory.

Dear Mary, David and family,
I am very shocked and saddened to hear about your loss. My family used to live next door to you on Hilltop Avenue (The Maennik's) and I remember playing with Karl when he was a little boy. He was so cute and loved playing in his sandbox and his pretend Chinese Restaurant in the backyard. I did not have the fortune to know him as a grown man, but from what I have read he was a true gift of God and what a blessing he has been to so many people. My condolences to you and your family.

To All of Karl’s family and friends.
Words could never do justice to Karl’s rare character. We spent years in production rooms and in the mass commute to work. His talent was only eclipsed by his great sense of humor, his love of life, his love for family and friends.
Being my “car buddy”, we talked for hours about family, fishing and vacation experiences. Many times Karl talked about the future he was building. Immortality in this world is how your family and friends remember you and I will always picture Karl with that side smile as he was laughing at our dysfunctions on the job. We have all lost a rare gem and one of Gods greatest children.

To Jen and all of Karl's family,
I want to extend sincere sympathy from my family to yours. Karl was a very active and vital part of the praise team ministry at Gunpowder Baptist Church using his talents at the sound booth. There were many hours unknown to others Karl spent helping the praise team to prepare for worship. My son, Ben, who is away at college and was part of the praise team, remarked about Karl's hours of contibutions. When my son and other high school grads. were preparing to leave for college, Karl made a CD of the grads. using baby pictures and current pictures to show at a church service honoring the grads. Karl also recorded weekly sermons for shut-ins and anyone who was in need of a CD of the sermon. All of this he did patiently, quietly, with a smile, being a humble servant for God. He will be remembered this way by all who were touched by his ministry. May you all find peace and comfort in these memories.

I am shocked as I had heard nothing before this notice showed up.
I worked with Karl and he was unfailingly one of the nicest, most upbeat people you could meet.
With a sharp wit, a kind demeanor and an unflappable attitude 'under fire' when working graphics for live shows, he was someone you looked forward to being with.
I knew him only on the job, but it was enough to see what a wonderful man he was.
My deepest condolences to his wife and familiy.
I will miss him.
