Laurence Orendorff Obituary

Laurence F. Orendorff, also known as "Larry" and "Coach O," passed away on Tuesday, August 2nd, at the age of 78 from congestive heart failure. Although his heart gave out at the end, he was truly "all heart" in how he lived his life. Larry spent 33 years in the Baltimore County Public School system, teaching driver's education and biology, coaching multiple sports, and eventually becoming a guidance counselor, which was his true calling. He completed his career with BCPS as the Guidance Department Chairman at Eastern Technical High School. After retiring from BCPS, Larry immediately began his second career as a college adjunct professor at Baltimore International College, a culinary school in Baltimore, although cooking wasn't in his curriculum. In his spare time, Larry coached and refereed a variety of sports, but lacrosse was his favorite. He was an official with the Southern Lacrosse Officials Association for many years. In his retirement years, he was active in his parish community at St. Joseph's Fullerton, the Knights of Columbus, and the Mount St. Mary's Alumni Association. Larry will be missed by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Jean Orendorff, his children, Jennifer Triaca-Puller (and husband Joe Puller), Tara Orendorff (and partner Matt Hannigan), and Gail Orendorff-Weiner (and husband Barry Weiner), his brother Charles Bernstein, his sister Fran Mcanally, as well as his grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Paul and Isabelle. An eternal optimist, Larry will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his off-key singing of country tunes, his late arrivals, his devotion to Baltimore's "birds" and NASCAR, and his joie de vie. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 4, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Schimunek Funeral Home, 9705 Belair Rd., Nottingham, MD 21236. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, August 5, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church (Fullerton), 8420 Belair Rd., Baltimore, MD 21236. A celebration of life will follow at the St. Joseph Church Hall.

I taught with Larry at B.I.C. Larry was a great friend and I miss him. We lost touch several years after B.I.C. but he was in my thoughts. Rest in peace old friend.

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Larry "Coach". He was a wonderful man, father, coach, etc. We were friends from St. Dominic's and St. Dominic's Athletic Association. He coached my daughter's soccer team and he was very patient, kind and knowledgeable. I will keep Jean and her family in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless them and may Larry's soul rest in peace.

To Jean and Family,
I was privileged to work with Larry on the lacrosse field may times in our careers. What I remember most about him was his soft manner and his wisdom. He always had a way of expressing himself that showed him as a very positive person. He is also remembered by a very strong speech he made at one of our meetings in support of raising our fees in Baltimore County.
Remember all that he did with you and for you, and he will live in your heart forever. The sadness you feel today will turn to happy memories in the years to come.

Please know that you have my deepest sympathy for the loss of Larry. I know it will do little to help but you are in my thoughts and prayers during this time. May God give the strength to bear this sorrow.

Jenny and I were saddened to learn of Laurence's passing. Though we were unable to meet him in person, we are eternally glad that we were able to bring Charles back into his life. Hopefully we will be able to meet the family later this year.
