Leitner Winstead Obituary

On January 23, 2022, Leitner Winstead was at peace as she took her last breath. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019 but continued to create memories, have adventures, laugh, love and live. Leitner was an amazing source of compassion, creativity, and joy, whose passions included designing and making clothes for film, jazz musicians or someone's special day. Leitner was tremendously proud of her daughter, Amanda Johnson, who carries on Leitner's beauty and talent for design. Leitner is also survived by her wife/lifetime partner of over 31 years, Monte Ephraim; her brothers and family, Hugh and Beth Winstead, Bruce and Susan Winstead and Bob Winstead, as well as many loving nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to GBMC, Dr. Cairamonte's Program, Integrative Medicine Palliative Care; AA (Alcoholics Anonymous); or the The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). In Leitner's honor, remember that Love is Love.

I will miss Leitner. When I came to Baltimore for a new job it wasn't easy to make new friends. I work with her wife, Monte and we became friends quickly and then when I met Leitner she was open and kind and I felt connected immediately. My favorite memory with her is shopping, sightseeing and dining in New Orleans. Her creativity, kindness and gentle nature made spending time with her a joy. I send my condolences to Monte, Amanda and the rest of Leitner's family and friends.

Leitner was a good friend back in the late sixties. She had so many great qualities but if I had to select one or two I'd say her compassion for others stood out as well as her generosity. Clever and kind, accepting and understanding, she was in many ways an old soul. Peace and happiness to you, dear Leitner, as you enter into this new realm of existence. Seems like you lived your life with purpose and authenticity - always searching for the better "you". So many lessons we all could pull from your playbook. It was so lovely to know you . Fly free......

The thing about sewing is that you can always learn new ways of doing things. Leitner & I came together to make a wedding gown... She showed me many things while on this project. She was an amazingly talented designer I am so glad we had the opportunity to collaborate! Rest In Peace
