Manoel Penna Obituary

PENNA, M.D. , Manoel W. Manoel Wilson dos Santos Penna, M.D., formally from Baltimore, MD, died unexpectedly at the U.C.L.A. Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. He was 69 years old. He was born in Brazil on February 11, 1938. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ignez J. Penna M.D., three children: Isabella Penna Sledge M.D., Ronald Jansen Penna, and Eric Jansen Penna, as well as his son-in-law John Sledge M.D. and two grandchildren: Alexa and Jake Sledge. He was well-known in Baltimore as a highly respected psychiatrist throughout his career. In 1964 he was brought to Maryland from Belem, Brazil by Dr. Eugene B. Brody, Director of the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (IPHB) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. After completing his residency he was a Staff Psychiatrist at IPHB until 1984. Concurrently he joined the psychiatric service at the Maryland General Hospital. He was known for his specialty of ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) and was a consulting psychiatrist for geriatric patients at several nursing facilities in Maryland. In 1986 he joined a group practice in psychiatry headed by John R. Lion M.D. In 1994 he opened his own office at Greenspring Station in Lutherville, MD while continuing in practice at Maryland General Hospital. He retired to Los Angeles, CA , in 2001.
His wife, Ignez J. Penna joined her husband at the University of Maryland, IPHB, practicing psychiatry there. She later joined her husband in group and private practice before retiring with him to Los Angeles.
A Memorial Service for Dr. Manoel W. Penna is to be conducted by Bishop Denis J. Madden, in the Crypt of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, 408 N. Charles St., Baltimore. MD, on Saturday May 5th , at 10:00 A.M.
