I am, along with all of those who knew him at St. Margaret, upset to learn of his death. Few physicians have his skill at decision making so closely connected to personnel warmth and charity. When I was recruiting other medical students to be residents here, I almost always cited Matt as a measure of the quality of those other residents with whom the student would be able to work. His successes made us all proud. On top of that he always made me smile and helped me to believe. My condolences to Kathy, Shannon and Gregory. Matt is surely going to be missed.

Matt was always a pleasure to be around in med school. It is obvious he continued to be that way all his life. Nothing could be more honoring than his daughter´s comments. I wish the whole family and especially Kathy my deepest condolences and encouragement.

I worked with Dr. McKenna and my office was next to his. He was a wonderful human being. Always positive and a great teacher to my medical students. His jovial laugh was one of a kind and something that I have missed since he left Emory. He is greatly missed and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to meet and know him.

I was an incoming EIS office who interviewed with Dr. McKenna (Matt) during my match week in April 1993. I was immediately impressed with Matt - he was very personable, honest, and clearly very smart and knowledgeable. I did not end up working at the Cancer Division for the position I was interviewing for, and I am not sure that we interacted directly again. We probably met for 20 minutes all told but he made a very lasting impression on me. Thank you Matt for you kind words, sound advice and wise counsel. You will be missed by many at CDC and elsewhere.

I worked with Matt in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and in the HIV Surveillance Branch at CDC. My office was next to his so I was fortunate to hear his laugh multiple times a day. Matt was a pragmatic leader, top-notch scientist, and was the model of integrity. The world needs more people like Matt. My deepest sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace.

I worked with Matt in the HIV Surveillance branch. The first time I went to his office and was greeted by a doormat that said "Hi, I'm Matt!". I knew I would enjoy working with him! Matt was a great mentor, and it was an honor to work with him. My deepest condolences to his family.

I worked with Matt in the Office on Smoking and Health at CDC. He had such a positive can-do approach to his work and was so supportive of me especially in providing guidance in working as a Commissioned Corps officer. What wonderful contributions he made to public health in fact we are still talking about some of the ideas he brought to our work. Condolences to his family who he loved so much.

I worked with Matt at CDC. My memories of Matt are his humor, smile, and treating everyone equal no matter if you were administrative staff or scientific staff. Matt´s laugh was contagious. Happy my path crossed with Dr. McKenna!!

I worked with Matt at the Division of TB Elimination at CDC during the 1990's. You knew that Matt was at work by the sound of laughter coming from his office! He approached all that he did with enthusiasm and joy and it was always great to work with him. Condolences to his family who lost a great man, husband and father.

I worked with Matt at CDC and really enjoyed his sense of humor....and his intelligence. He would tell you what he thought -persuasive but not dogmatic. Miss him.

I am so sorry to learn of Matt's passing. I missed an opportunity to visit long ago, and mistakenly assumed I no longer had the opportunity. I worked with Matt early in my TB career and admired his enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, skill and good humor. I missed him when he left the Division, and missed him when he left Fulton County. My condolences and best wishes to his family,

Sad news about Mat's passing. Mat supervised me during a post-doc with the CDC. He was a great mentor who helped me see public health from yet another viewpoint. Since condolences to his family in these difficult times.

Matt McKenna was my classmate for many years at Perry Hall and we shared many a laugh. He was just a nice young man who was also gifted with brains. Every memory I have of Matt is good. So sorry to hear of his passing and the family´s unthinkable loss.
Christian love to Matt´s family,
