Merel Meyer Obituary

Merel Dean Meyer, age 84, of Fallston, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2025. Born in Greeley, Colorado, he was the son of the late Merel Theodore Meyer and Viola Mary (Kiesel) Meyer.

Merel proudly served his country in the United States Army for over 30 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A decorated veteran and a proud American, he was known for his dedication, discipline, and leadership. He was a straight-shooter and led a life guided by structure and service-except when it came to his grandchildren, for whom he had an unmistakable softness and affection.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 40 years, Vincine Sharon Meyer (née Hupka), with whom he shared a deeply devoted and fulfilling life. Merel is also survived by his son Ray "Chance" Butler and his wife Mary (Schultz-Butler), and his beloved grandchildren: Brittnee Butler and wife Caitlyn (Butler), Juliann Butler, and Stephanie Schultz. His joy was further multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Iris Butler, Shaun Butler, Katiri Swann, and Joseph Schultz-Schuester.

He is also survived by his brother Randy Meyer.

Merel was preceded in death by his brother, Terry Meyer, and his sister, Marlene Meyer.

In retirement, Merel found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved boating and fishing and spent countless hours in his workshop tinkering and keeping himself busy. He was an avid camper-always prepared to the nines-and loved spontaneous long drives with no destination, simply enjoying the journey. He was deeply organized, always on top of his finances, and made sure his family was well cared for. Despite his military nature, he led a humble and grounded life, where his greatest pride was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 2 – 4 & 6 - 8 PM at McComas Family Funeral Homes in Bel Air, Maryland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 11:30 AM at St. Mark Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Merel's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriner's Children's Hospital.

Online condolences may be left at mccomasfuneralhome.com.

Merel will be remembered as a strong, steadfast, and loving man whose legacy of service, devotion, and love for his family will live on for generations.
