Michael Citro Obituary

Michael Phillip Citro of Towson, MD, transitioned on June 17, 2024, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 79.

He is survived by his partner and husband of 34 years, William Edward Dozier; his children, Megan Lee Dozier and Edward Travis Dozier, both of Norfolk, VA; Kimberly Citro Mullins of Wise, VA and Michael Phillip Citro Jr of Baltimore; his sister Theresa Alberghimi and husband John of CT, and brother Nicholas Citro and wife Rose of Baltimore. Michael is also survived by 1 grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Michael dedicated 30 years to Baltimore County Public Schools and was a highly regarded principal and educator, beginning with the Chapter One Program, Principal at Sandalwood Elementary, and retiring as the first Principal of Jacksonville Elementary. After retiring from education, Michael and Ed owned several businesses both in Baltimore as well as Key West, where they called home for over 10 years before returning to Maryland.

Former Associate Superintendent of Education for Baltimore County and State Superintendent of Education for the State of Maryland, Dr. Nancy Grasmick said of Michael, "He was a dedicated professional who always had the best interests of his students at heart. He was admired and loved by students, staff members and colleagues throughout the state."

The family would like to thank the tireless efforts of all his Doctors and Nurses that helped him through his battle with cancer. Michael donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board of MD to help further advance medical research in hopes that he might help the next generation in the battle with cancer.

There will be a Celebration of Life later in the year.

I was a parent at the time Jacksonville Elementary opened. However, I jumped in as a parent volunteer. Michael treated me as part of the team. He gave me confidence I didn't know I had. He encouraged me to go back to college, which I did, and received my degree in education. Although he wasn't the principal when I graduated, I was hired at Jacksonville and enjoyed a wonderful career. Anytime we were together Michael always, took time to chat with me personally. He was a very special friend.

Michael lead by example. You always wanted to be the best teacher because of the high standards he set for himself. I´ll always remember the numerous personalized neatly written notes he somehow found the time to write. He was an exceptional leader and a kindhearted man.

My first Principal. Always wanting the best for students. A dear, loyal friend; we remained friends, connected as family friends are.
My heart is broken at the loss of his physical presence in my life.
