Peter Van Dyke Obituary

Scientist and T. Rowe Price Investment Director

Peter Van Dyke died on October 16, 2024, at the age of 85 from the effects of a fall. Born in 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio to George E. Van Dyke, a college business administrator, and Beatrice Sommer Van Dyke, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Ray Van Dyke, his sons, George Van Dyke of Baltimore, and Peter Van Dyke, Jr., (Georgia) of New York City, and his beloved grandchildren Edward Van Dyke, Lucy Van Dyke, William Van Dyke, and Robert Van Dyke.

Peter graduated from Webb Institute, earned a PhD at Harvard University in Engineering and Applied Physics, and later an MS in Management Science from Johns Hopkins University. He and his wife lived in Bolton Hill and later built a contemporary house in Poplar Hill in North Baltimore.

His life as a research scientist began at Hydronautics Inc., later at the Martin Company, and at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.

A man of many interests and hobbies, Peter started a small investment club, a hobby which later led to a job in quantitative financial management at T.Rowe Price where he became Managing Director of the new Spectrum series of mutual funds.

His hobbies included bird watching, duck hunting, bee keeping and collecting hunting decoys. The Van Dykes built a second home on Lankford Creek outside of Chestertown, MD, where they spent weekends.

An enthusiastic traveler, Peter and his family enjoyed Wagnerian opera in Germany, and adventure trips in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. Proud of his

Dutch and Danish heritage, he travelled to Holland and to the Danish island of Bornholm, from which his maternal grandfather emigrated to America as a teenager.

He served as a trustee at Webb Institute and Washington College and as President of the Holland Society of New York, and belonged to the Maryland Club and the

Elkridge Club.

Pete was a senior at Webb Institute when I was a freshman. We played on the basketball team and competed in intramural sports. I appreciate all the time he put in as a Webb trustee and as a financial adviser. Most of the Webbies continue to support the school after graduation, but few have the impact that Pete did.
