Richard DOSS Obituary

DOSS , Dr. Richard H. On July 2, 2009, Richard Hallock Doss died in his home at Broadmead in Cockeysville Maryland. He was 86. Dr. Doss was a retired psychiatrist and public health physician. Dr. Doss was born in Chicago and attended Illinois Wesleyan University. During World War II he served in the Navy. In 1946 he married Jane Harrell of Thomasville Georgia. He graduated from Medical School at Johns Hopkins University in 1948. While raising his family in Towson Maryland he worked for Sheppard Pratt Hospital and had a private psychiatric practice. He also provided psychiatric services for Goucher College and Baltimore County. He was active in the American Friends Service student exchange program and hosted a number of students. Dr. Doss enjoyed photography, golf and raising camellias. In 1977 he completed Master Degree in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He then worked for the United Nations World Health Organization for 5 years administering regional mental health programs in Kingston Jamaica and Brazzaville Republic of Congo. He and his wife enjoyed extensive world travel. They returned to Savannah Georgia where he was the administrator of a psychiatric hospital until his retirement. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Cockeysville and lived at Broadmead for 13 years. He served as the treasurer of the Broadmead Residents Association. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jane Harrell Doss. He is survived by three children: Catherine D. Morrow of Bend Oregon, Robert H. Doss of Sydney Australia, and Richard L. Doss of Olga Washington, and four grandchildren: Caroline, Sam, Esther and Ray Doss.
A service will be held at Broadmead in Cockeysville on Saturday July 25 at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

So sorry that he has gone on ahead. Dick was such a cooly avuncular guy....he was always smiling when he and Jane came to visit our parents at their beach home in New Jersey....we just loved his soft-spoken quips and bon mots. God bless and keep him....
