Richard Kastendieck Obituary

On the morning of July 5, Richard Kastendieck passed away peacefully, after an 11-month battle with a rare form of cancer. He was born on January 26, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Dr. Miles Merwin Kastendieck and Clementine Hall Kastendieck, both deceased. Richard received degrees from Drew University,University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Temple University. Rich was an attorney for over 35 years in Philadelphia, Bucks County and Baltimore. In 2003 he retired from the Maryland Attorney General's Office after almost 20 years of dedicated service as Assistant Attorney General. Always an active member of his community, Rich served two years post-college with VISTA as a draft counselor during the time of the Vietnam War. For 20 years, Rich was a board member with New Pathways. He was president of the Mt. Washington Improvement Association in 1999, and served as an officer on the board of the Mt. Washington PTO. An athlete and avid sports enthusiast, Rich was a wrestler and football player; and continued to stay active, hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail and attending Pilates classes every Saturday. Rich was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens. Rich is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sally J. Miles and his children, Molly Kastendieck and Miles Kastendieck, and his beloved pets. He is also survived by his twin brother, Dr. Jon Kastendieck of Denver and sister, Carol Kastendieck of Brooklyn, NY. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit and share memories at an open house from 4pm-7pm on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Richard's Lutherville home, 1206 Somerset Place. I was one of only four boys who went from Packer with Richard, Jon Kastendieck, Bill Berry and myself on to Poly in 1958 and then graduated from Poly in 1965. Richard was always the one with a quick laugh and giggle throughout those years. He was a wonderful guy to grow up with and will be missed. My condolences to his family. Cell # 954-203-7707

I had dinner recently with Lou Vigorita and he told me the news.I ran "board" track with Richie at Poly. He was faster than I. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. I read the obituary and am very impressed by his accomplishment. My sincere condolences to the Kastendieck family. Jon, I can only imagine how you feel. I wish you all the best getting through this. I am a classmate of Richard's from Poly Prep. Class of 1965. We just celebrated our 50th reunion and wondered where the Kastendieck boys were. Now I know and am saddened at our loss. Richard was a great guy in high school and we shared many yuks! I will always remember his feats on the football field and his 100% effort against Calvin Hill in the Riverdale game 1965. I was the cheerleader for the school at that time ( it was all boys then ) and remember how energized the fans were with Richard's exploits. It is with fond memory that I bid farewell to my friend from many years ago and with deepest sympathy for his loved ones that I I now write this. Lou Vigorita, Ventura, California.

I will miss eating crabs with Rich at our annual crab feast and seeing him at our work weekends. I enjoyed talking to him about our respective pets and I will miss his jokes. The Windbreaker family will miss you Rich.
