Richard D. Wagner

Richard D. Wagner of College Park, MD died at Sibley Memorial Hospital on Sunday, May 14, 2023. He was born in Towson, MD, the son of Donald and Catherine Wagner. Richard grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Architecture (B Arch) and the University of Edinburgh (PhD Arch). He dedicated his career to preserving historic buildings and stabilizing neighborhoods. Richard founded the Urban Main Street Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the M.A. in Historic Preservation program at Goucher College, and the College Park City University Partnership, which he chaired twice in its twenty-year history. A registered architect, Richard was a partner in David H. Gleason Associates, Inc. in Baltimore, where he did design work for Baltimore Main Street and many private clients. He enjoyed travel and lectured on architecture for the National Trust's tours of the Cotswolds and cruises of the Danube, the Baltic Sea, and the Rhine River. Richard is survived by his wife, Janet; his son, Thomas and partner, Katerina, of London, UK; and his brother, Thomas, of Ridley Township, PA.
