Richard Webster Obituary

Richard "Dick" Webster, born on March 23, 1941 to the late James McCormick Webster, Sr. and the late Gertrude Lee Webster, died at age 79 on January 18, 2021. Troubled in recent years by several health complications, the cause of his death more than any other reason was his broken heart after the loss of his beloved wife, Betty, in 2019.

Dick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Before her loss, he was married to Betty for 57 years and together they demonstrated the meaning of lifelong devotion to their sons Richard E. Webster Jr., Michael H. Webster, David W. Webster, and daughter Elizabeth Webster Twomey. He loved, worried about, and will be deeply missed by each of their grandchildren; Patrick, Grace, Jack, Luke, Harrison Maisy, Christian, Michael, Maeve, and Lily. In addition, he is survived by his baby sister, Mary Webster Wiglesworth.

Dick devoted his life to the education of young people and the development of their character, in the classroom and on playing fields, courts, and mats across the country. A proud graduate of The Johns Hopkins University, where he served as captain of the varsity lacrosse team, he began his career as a teacher and coach and never stopped doing either. He worked with and for young men and women at the Severn School, Sewickley Academy, the Wroxeter School, Landon School, LaLumiere School, Montclair-Kimberly Academy, and The Boys' Latin School.

In his later years he devoted himself to carefully helping students to select colleges and universities that would best match their individual abilities and unique aspirations. Among his last thoughts, he dreamed he was helping his beloved "BL kids" to choose schools that would help them, as he taught, to "Bag the excuses" and to "Be the best they could be." The number of lives he helped shape by the example he set and the guidance he gave cannot be counted. Above all, he showed everyone he cared about that a life worth living was one in which the word "Love" was spoken out loud and often.

Dick was a devout Catholic, and a funeral mass in his memory will be said for his immediate family on Friday, January 22 at the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier in Cockeysville. Those who wish to donate in his memory may send gifts to the Boys' Latin Alumni Scholarship Fund, Development Office, 822 West Lake Avenue, Baltimore, MD, 21210.

If everyone was like Dick Webster, Jesus wouldn't have had to die on the cross.

...but once.

I have not heard from your Dad in a while. He always stopped in and checked on me. As much as I hated to, I checked obituaries. I figured this is why I had not seen him. So sorry for your loss. I miss him immensely. He had so many stories of your vacations. I will miss him.

I just saw this and I’m so sad as your father was such a major influence to me at Sewickley having coached me in so many ways beyond sports. I still remember the prayer we were required to say out loud before our games.

Coach was a major influence in my life and the lives of many young students. I was glad I was able to connect with him to let him know that he meant so much to me and the Wroxeter family. I still remember pick up games with the young Webster kids with Donnie Sadler. My family’s thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will always strive to be the best.

Tom, thanks so much for your note. Dad had such fond memories of those days, as did I, both as a little guy and then as a Severn student myself. Much appreciated.

Principal and Coach Webster, you were a motivator to us at MKA. You wanted us to be better because you knew we could be. On the lacrosse field, you taught us life lessons, not just plays. In the hallways, you taught us respect for others. All while letting us still be kids. Thank you for your dedication to guiding young people.

As I know he was with others, Dick was a major influence on my life. I had him as a classroom teacher and coach, and he was humorous and caring while at the same time a forceful taskmaster. The result was legions of well adjusted, productive adults.
He called us Severn guys "his boys". How proud we are to be considered such by as wonderful a mentor as Dick.
I already miss you, coach; you will always be my favorite teacher anywhere.
My condolences to the Webster Family,
Tom Smith, Severn '68

Webby was a real gem who will surely be missed! I enjoyed working with him at Jemicy. He adored his children, grandchildren, and his Betty. I spent a few dinners with Betty and Dick and the love between the two was amazing. He made a difference in the lives of many students. The entire family is in my thoughts and prayers!

Mr. Webster was such an inspiration and a huge help to me when my son was applying to colleges. He was his college advisor at BL and such a loss to that school when he left. Rest in peace!

Your father and grandfather was a real gem. I truly enjoyed our conversations as I got to know him better over the past years at St. Francis Xavier. As I promise, I kept my eye out for him. Godspeed Dick. You are now at peace, reunited with your beloved Betty. Thanks for gracing my life.

I had the pleasure of working with Dick Webster at Jemicy. I keep in touch with him just recently. He gave me the scoop on his son's and daughter, and he loved talking about his grandchildren. He also spoke about his amazing wife, Betty. I lost a true mentor and will miss my talks with him on the phone or at Hopkins lax games. Miss you Web.

Thanks Jim, much appreciated. If it had been a Christmas Mass Dad would have wanted us to be there a good hour and a half early to get the good seats, even though they were always near the back!

My thoughts and prayers are with Dick’s family. We had this thing’ between us that I would point to my watch when he would settle into his pew a minute or more late’.

I’m happy that I ran into Dick and his son after church just before Christmas. Of course he was on time because his son brought him.

Just another obviously good guy who I only ran into at Mass, but am a little bit better person for having done so.

I am shocked and greatly saddened to hear the news of my colleague and friend, Dick Webster. He and I arrived together as new administrators at the Boys' Latin School of MD in 1993. He was a caring and skilled college counselor and teacher; the school and its students were so very blessed to have him.
