Sally Livingston Obituary

Sally Ann Livingston died peacefully at her home in Columbia, MD on January 8, 2016 surrounded by family and friends after a valiant battle with lung cancer. She was born December 3, 1952 in San Francisco, CA, to Jean and Carl Livingston, Jr. She studied drama at UCLA and UC Berkeley, graduating in 1974. She performed at Berkeley Repertory Theater and returned to UCLA for a master's in Theater Arts. While working at Center Stage Repertory Theater as Director of PR, she met and married Richard Goldman, a native of Baltimore, MD. They moved to Columbia in 1988, where they raised their two children, Andrew Carl and Erica Jean Goldman. In 1996, Sally began teaching drama in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) - at Wilde Lake High School and then Marriott's Ridge. In 2010, HCPSS named her "Arts Educator of the Year." Her students credit her with their success and her ability to challenge them to act with "speed and purpose." Sally loved spending time with family and friends - traveling for summer vacations to Carmel, CA, where her parents lived. Her outgoing nature, caring and empathic spirit, generosity and ability to find humor in everything were magnetic. She was fiercely loyal and engendered the same from the many people who loved her. Sally is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard, her children, Andrew (Kristen) and Erica, her brother, Chip Livingston (Leslie), niece Sarah, uncle, Barry Livingston, and cousins, Michael and Brian Livingston. Her family thanks Maryland Oncology Hematology, Gilchrist Hospice, Laura Cochran, Marcia Ravasio, and the many other caregivers who provided support during her illness. A celebration of her life will be held on January 30, 2016 at 2:30pm at Wilde Lake Interfaith Religious Center. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cancer Support Foundation, the Epilepsy Foundation, or the Howard Country Arts Council.

Sally was my "sisty ugler" at UCLA and I adored her big sister approach to my undergraduate fears. Having both grown up in SF we had so much in common
I lost touch after that which reminds me to seize the day
I know she will be missed

Words cannot express the tremendous kindness and inspiration Sally bestowed upon our daughter while at Wilde Lake HS.
"Big Sal" non only taught, coached, trained, guided and inspired our "Little Sal" she watched out for her future, encouraging her to apply for a theater scholarship that sent our Sally on her joy filled career path. We are ever grateful for Sally's energy and talent and most of all for her joy. On behalf of our Sally and all the students she influenced, I thank you, Sally Livingston, you will be missed.

I was a friend of Sally's in high school in San Francisco. She was always enthusiastic, positive and caring. I am saddened with this news, yet so pleased to learn that the wonderful spirit I knew in high school went on to spread her joy, passion and talent.

DEAREST LIV!
Besides being the very best in your career, you were an awesome teacher, Mom away from home for many students, and a very dear friend. You were the best of listeners and always ready for a good laugh.
You will be remembered for your kind and caring demeanor. Who could ever forget the twinkle in you eyes and your contagious giggle?
Rest in peace! You will be greatly missed!
Fondly,

When I think of Sally, I think of her smile and bounding energy when she entered a room. I enjoyed working with her on the board of the Howard County Arts Council and the Celebration of the Arts Gala. May her family and friends find comfort during this difficult time by remembering all she did for our community and all those whom she touched with her beautiful spirit.

Words cannot quantify the love that hundreds, if not thousands of students, friends, and family feel for Sally. Words cannot encapsulate the void and the grief brought about by her passing. Words do not convey any sense of the vibrant, boundlessly energetic, endlessly loving, supportive, generous, hilarious soul that was Sally. I am a better person for having known her. We are all better people for having known her. And that is the legacy of a life well lived. Sal lives on in all of us who were lucky enough to be enriched by her friendship and her love. Goldman Family, you have my deepest sympathy for this unfathomable loss.

My deepest condolences to you all. Sal is the epitome of a soul that anyone on this Earth could strive to become. With her never-ending smile and humor, Sal did so much for any person she ever came into contact with and did so with fervor and tenacity. She was my inspiration to teach and involve kids in theatre. Her legacy lives on and on. I am forever grateful to have called her my teacher and my model as an educator.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this extremely difficult time.

Sally had a super-human capacity for loving, caring and supporting students and friends who ventured into her realm. She made life a better place to be with her sassy remarks, her silly pet names and sparkling smile. <3 you SalGal.

Dear Richard and family,
My heart is breaking as I try to accept the fact that Sally is no longer with us. I have wonderful memories of working on WLHS musicals with her and of our trip to Edinburgh and London. Sally could always make me laugh and I know I'm not alone on that front. She was a gem and I loved her dearly. She left an indelible mark on hundreds of lives!

Take care and please do not hesitate to let me know if I can help you in any way.
Love,
Patty

Richard, Andrew, and EJ.....The words escape me to express how sad I am for your loss! Sally was such an amazing person and friend. Although we had not seen each other much the last couple of years I never questioned that friendship! She touched the minds and hearts of so many students and parents. I credit her with giving my Christian direction when he was struggling to find it. She quickly became his second mom! Sally was also a great mentor for Laura during her high school years. She touched each of our hearts in so many ways! For that I will always be grateful! I am holding you all close in thoughts and prayers as you navigate this very difficult and sad time!
