Sherman Kahan Obituary
Dr. Sherman Kahan, 68, a cardiologist in Frederick for over 30 years, died December 24, 2013 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Katie, and their combined six children, Elizabeth Holtz and husband, Dan, Jacob Kahan and fiancé, Stephanie Gardner, David Kahan and fiancé, Ashley Parsons, Laura Thompson and boyfriend, Matt Desetti, Seth Kahan and girlfriend, Courtney Bomberger, and Samuel Kahan. Also a cousin, Barry Ominsky; sister, Naoma Stern and husband, Irving; sister-in-law, Betsy Kahan and cousin, David Tamir.
Services will be held at 10am on December 27 from Beth Sholom Community Center, 1011 North Market Street, Frederick. Interment in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Donations in his name should be made to the charity of one's choice. Keeney & Basford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences at

Although it has been over two years, I just learned of Sherman's passing today. He was a great physician, a kind man, and an outstanding human being.
He was a father figure to me during my time in Frederick. I will always remember him and think of him as still being there.

He called me "Stretch" and we jokingly traded many insults over the years. Sherman was a gifted teacher and spent many hours teaching dysrrhymias and electrophysiology to the ICU and ED staff. I considered it an honor to serve on the panel with him to choose the candidates for the very first paramedic class in the county. He taught the very first ACLS class at FMH. Doctors and nurses attended lectures together, partnered in the skills and jointly suffered through the written exam ultimately leading to better care for the community. Sincere condolences to his family and may you find comfort in knowing the difference his presence to his adopted home town.

Dr. Kahan was a kind and generous man, but it was his terrific sense of humor -- and enthusiasm -- that made him such a magnetic personality. I'll always cherish the evening my family spent with his at Hanukkah time (at his invitation) over latkes. And as an adult, I'll cherish the many humorous emails he shared in recent years. He will be missed.
