Sue Amrein Obituary

Our mother, Sue (Louise) Amrein, age 99, of Joppa Maryland has entered her new home and a glorious welcoming awaited her. Our father Mervin, her mother and father, Walter Lee and Carrie A. (Wales) Iley, her loving sister Betty Moore, and of course her wonderful lovingly antagonistic brother Wilbur, all greeting her with open arms and loving smiles. The months of discomfort are behind her now- she is young again, WELCOME HOME LOUISE!

Louise was born September 1,1921 at her grandparents' home in Woodbine, PA and grew up on her family's farm on Grier Nursery Road in Harford County Maryland. Mom was a farm girl in the truest sense, telling us amazing stories of driving the team of mules when she was only 8 years old, milking the cows by hand with her brother Wilbur, telling how when she would walk by, he would inevitably squirt her with the cow's milk. Her reply to him was, "Okay Mr. Wiseguy, you can finish milking yourself" as she would have to go wash the milk out of her hair to get ready for school.

After graduating from Highland High School in Street Maryland, she met her future husband, our dad, Mervin W. Amrein. They married in 1942. While our dad was stationed in England, mom worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at Glenn L. Martin.

After the war, Mom and Dad bought the general store, originally owned by the Klein family, located in the heart of Fallston, next to the Ma & Pa Railroad station. Soon after this purchase, they merged with mom's brother Wilbur and sister-in-law Lois Iley and the store was known for years as the Amrein & Iley General Store, becoming the hub of the farming community. Then in 1958, when the "new" road, Route 152 was constructed, and with declining farming in the area, the once thriving business was sold.

In 1943 the first of three children were born, Linda followed by Jerry then Thomas (Tom) Amrein.

Louise was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church and a former member of Fallston Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a deaconess. Louise had many interests and talents throughout the years, but her first and foremost passion was her cooking and baking for family and friends. She was known for her homemade rolls and strawberry freezer jam amongst dozens and dozens of other recipes, which only she could create to perfection. At a moment's notice Louise would prepare food for any of her friends or family in need. She also loved having a garden, and until recently was able to maintain a large vegetable garden, canning the vegetables that she grew, even winning a blue ribbon at the State Fair for her prized pickles.

The family would like to thank Lee and Bob Crush for their many hours of enjoyment, visiting, playing cards, and sharing meals with Louise. Also, a special thank-you to Karen Hladik, Bette Scarborough, Karen Jennings Lloyd, and her very special nephew, Dick Scarborough.

Mom peacefully passed away on May 10, 2021 at Senator Bob Hooper House in Forest Hill, Maryland. She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Jack) L. Heath of Alpharetta, GA; two sons, Jerry (Kathy) L. Amrein of Stewartstown, PA, and Thomas (Lynn) W. Amrein of Port Deposit; nine grandchildren, John Heath, Jr., Jeromy Amrein, Justin Amrein, Danna Pomeroy, Donna Sales-Smith, Kimberly Harris, Michelle Figueroa, Nicholas Panzer Amrein, Christopher Panzer Amrein; great-grandchildren, Emma, Alex, Lyla, Trevor, Iley, Holden, Logan, Jeremy, Bridget, Rachel, Ethan, Gaby, Holland, Eden, Micah, Brennan, Rowan, and Caroline; and great-greatgranddaughter, Madison.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wilbur Lee Iley and sister, Elizabeth Priscilla Iley Moore.

Services will be private. A celebration of life will be held at a later date., close to when she would have turned 100 years old.
