Always remembering my buddy Bill at this time of the year. He was a special friend and colleague in my sports career. I still miss our many chats during our newspaper career at the Sunpapers in Baltimore. Till we meet again, Billy.

I can't believe it has been 12 years since my dear buddy Bill left us. Gosh, we shared so many stories together as we both worked in Baltimore at the Sunpapers, Bill on the morning paper and myself on the Evening Sun side...lots of laughs covering the preps, the colleges and the Orioles and Colts. And we both shared a love of basketball and covering the Terps of Maryland and also being teammates on the Sun basketball team. Billy had that high pounding dribble that we teased him about, and his love for "never passing up a shot" even when covered. LOL. What a dear friend, and he was one of the ushers in my wedding in 1973. I think of him often, and a smile always comes along with those thoughts.
May his soul rest in peace until we meet again. Billy Downtown Free!

Billy was a great friend, colleague and someone who could make you laugh and scream in the same sentence. We had some great times together in the 1970s when we competed against each other while covering the high schools, then college beats, and later the Orioles and Colts at the Sunpapers. Bill was a hard worker, always digging for a story. But he had a real compassionate side to him, and we shared more than a few laughs on the basketball court. "World B" was his nickname and another one he liked was "The Thrill." He loved the simple country life, and he loved his sons very much. He was proud of them. Bill and I kept in touch by phone over the years, even though I had moved to Chicago years ago to start a new career in pro baseball with the Cubs. Come Maryland football or basketball season, we'd be on the phone weekly, sharing our thoughts about the Terps. Bill loved the Terps, and enjoyed covering the basketball teams of Lefty Driesell. Anyone who met Bill was better because of it. He had a way of laughing that left the room smiling. RIP my friend.
