William Sur Obituary

William K. Sur, 92, died on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Maryland. Mr. Sur was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and was the son of the late W. Kenneth and Felicie (Covert) Sur, who were lifelong residents of Toledo. William was the husband of the late Margaret (Campbell) Sur.

Mr. Sur attended Central Catholic High School and graduated from Villanova University in 1954. He then spent 4 years as an officer in the US Navy. He attended George Washington University in their graduate studies Finance Program. Subsequently he spent the next 8 years in developmental positions in both sales and financial planning with 2 international chemical firms, rising to mid-management levels. He initiated his lifelong career in 1966 when he joined Spencer Stuart, a global, retained, executive search firm. Eventually, he was elected a partner and to the Board of Directors. In 1983, he embarked on an entrepreneurial track in executive search, conducting his own private practice through 4 iterations over the next 33 years culminating in the formation of his present firm, Conboy Sur Morice & Associates, in 2003. His success was recognized, most importantly, by the enduring relationships established with his clients. He was consistently listed in North America's Top Executive Recruiters edition of "The Career Makers" and more recently has been characterized in Business Week magazine as among the 100 most influential in the world in their executive search practice. He was a member of Maryland Golf & Country Club in Bel Air, Maryland and The Union League Club in New York City. He is survived by his children Katherine and her husband Robert Wein of Bel Air, Maryland, Nancy Sur and her husband Abraham Simmons of San Francisco, Kevin Sur and his wife Carla of Elko, Nevada and Patricia Sur and her husband Bruce Greenidge of San Francisco; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Bill. He was a good friend and a truly unique individual. I will always remember his distinctive laugh. My sincere condolences to his family. He will certainly be missed. I hope somewhere now he´s having an extraordinarily dry, Stolichnaya vodka martini straight up with a twist, hopefully a double. If a bottle of vermouth is open somewhere in the bar, that will be sufficient.
