Gary DePung Obituary

Gary L. DePung Battle Creek Gary Lee DePung, 74, of Battle Creek, died November 20, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 30, 1935, the son of Irving and Vivian (Phillips) DePung in Battle Creek Gary graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1953 and served in the National Guard. On March 19, 1955 he married Joan Davis. On their 50th wedding anniversary they renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas. He worked for 31 years as a Design Engineer at Clark Equipment retiring in 1985. He then went to work for GM in Lansing as a Design Engineer for 10 years. Gary is survived by his wife, Joan; son, Gregory (Susan) DePung of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Lissa (Mark) Krans of Skandia, MI; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, Rick (Kristen) Hirlemann of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving DePung and Vivian Hirleman; step father, Charles Hirlemann; and son, Steven M. DePung in 1981. Gary spent many adventures with his two sons in the Boy Scouts as he had served as a Cub Scout Master. Gary enjoyed RVing through his adult life, starting when his sons were very young. After retirement Gary and Joan traveled for nine years as full time RV'ers, traveling in the west. They would spend about four months of their winter in Las Vegas. He was a lifetime member of BPOE #131 and served as a past Exaulted Ruler. He was also in their bowling league. Gary especially enjoyed playing golf and at the age of 65, Gary developed a passion for watercolor painting. He was a member of First Congregational Church. The family will receive friends from 5- 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2009 at Shaw Funeral Home. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the funeral home with Rev. Thomas J. Ott, Pastor, First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment, Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may go to Lifespan-Good Samaritan Hospice Care or First Congregational Church. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home. www.shawfuneralhome.com
