Norman Fryer Obituary

Norman Fryer Sr.

Mr. Norman James Fryer Sr., 90, passed away peacefully at home Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 in New Orleans, La. with his family.

Mr. Fryer was born May 22, 1925, in Ecorse, Mich. to parents Robert and Clara (Goodell) Fryer. His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and fought in the European theater. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

He married Mary Etta Tucker on March 18, 1952. Mary preceded him in death in 2013.

He had a long career in police work, first as a patrolman and later as a detective. He served the City of Ecorse Police Department for 23 years, and then, after moving to Quincy, Mich., finished his career as a detective with the Branch County Sheriff's Department for 15 years.

His hobbies included bowling and tinkering with all kinds of engines. He and Mary enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels in their retirement.

He is survived by: five children including a son, Norman (Cheryl) Fryer of Augusta, Mich.; daughters Cheryl Fryer and Karen Owens of New Orleans, La.; daughter Patricia Duke of Angola, Ind.; daughter Marilynn Fryer of Parma, Mich.; grandchildren, Norman Fryer III of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Amanda (Kyle) Paffhausen of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Kami (Ken) German of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Denise Duke of Fort Worth, Texas; Michael (Jennifer) Duke of Angola, Ind.; Monica Fryer of Milwaukee, Wis.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Following cremation, a graveside memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich. Arrangements by Rhodes Funeral Homes of New Orleans, La. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army, Community Action Agency of Branch County Home-Delivered Meals Program, or Gretna Middle School Band Program in Gretna, La.
