Alexander McMahon Obituary

Alexander McMahon of Kingwood, Texas, breathed his last on May 24, 2021 at his home. He was born on January 3, 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland to Alexander and Mary Jane (Mulherine) McMahon, the youngest of five children. Already at a young age people noticed Alex's tremendous talent for singing, and the development of his operatic voice became a theme throughout his life. He sang in the church choir as a child in Moville, Ireland and as a teenage cabinetmaker's apprentice in Glasgow Scotland. He studied voice in Hamelin, Germany while with the British Army, at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux while with the American Army, and with Filippo DeStefano after moving to New York City with his wife, Jean (Bredernitz), of Fenton, MI, whom he married in 1965 After their daughter Jeanine was born a year later they eventually bought a home in Emerson, New Jersey, where he started a custom cabinet business. Alex continued to sing, performing regularly at The Carriage Club and appearing most notably on "Opera Stars of Tomorrow" and the "Ted Mack Show." After being invited to audition with the Metropolitan Opera, Alex decided to forego the travel this would involve and to devote himself instead to his family and his cabinet business, incorporating it as Designs by Mac. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S.A. As Alex and Jeanie got close to retirement they decided to move to be near their daughter's family, who had relocated to Kingwood, Texas. Alex loved to meet and charm people and became a well-liked figure in a variety of groups, be it a grandchild's orchestra or choir concert, the Young at Heart seniors' group at CTK, the Lodge, or whomever he might encounter at a local eating establishment. He will be fondly remembered for his singing, his Scots burr, his smile, and maybe especially for his signature strawberry candies which he like to give with a wink and a handshake.

Alexander McMahon is predeceased by his parents, his brother Andrew, and his sisters May, Eileen, and Dinah. He survived by his wife Jean, his daughter Jeanine Theimer (Doyle), grandchildren Alexander (Jasmin), Trevor, Zachary, and Kendra, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and so forth.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 4, 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 3803 West Lake Houston Parkway, Kingwood, TX, 77339. The service will also be live-streamed at https://www.youtube.com/c/CTKLutheran.
