Dick Harris Pewthers died Friday morning, November 16, 2012 of injuries sustained from a fall in February. Born February 13, 1947 in College Station, Dick was a true son of Texas. He was graduated from A&M Consolidated High School, Sam Houston State University, and The University of Houston with a Masters degree in Education with Mid-Management Certification. He spent his entire teaching career in Pasadena ISD at Pasadena High School and Dobie High School. He retired to Lake Travis in 1999, where he spent the rest of his life doing exactly what he wanted to do every single day.
He is predeceased by his parents Luevlan Gardner Pewthers Phillips and Charles Wallace Pewthers, his brother Jennings "J" Howard Pewthers. He is survived by his wife Patti, sons Randy (and wife Michelle) and John-Gardner Pewthers (wife Kristi), grandsons Brady, Ben, and William, granddaughter Gwyneth, and cousin Tom Potter (wife Weezie). Also dear friends, sister-in-law Rhea Wineinger and husband Orville, mother-in-law Joyce Easley, and brother-in-law Steven Swanner and wife Renea. He also leaves legions of friends and brothers of the Kappa Alpha Order.
"Big" to family and friends, he was a big guy with a big voice and a bigger personality. He was a true Renaissance man who could build furniture, landscape anything, raise chickens, do calligraphy and stained glass, make beer, and barbeque. He was a blogger before blogging was cool as he daily composed e-mails to friends and family on a myriad of topics that interested him. Dick loved nothing better than to get everyone he loved into his beloved "Stonehenge-North" home and entertain them for a weekend or a month.
Big didn't want a funeral; he is being cremated and will be buried in the Pewthers family plot in College Station. Patti is planning a celebration of his life there in the spring when the Hill Country is covered in bluebonnets.

I think of my Father every single day. I love and miss him so much. There is SO much he has taught me. The right way to live. The right way to speak. And the right way to believe. Dad is in my thoughts every day. I see things that are totally him. In my two boys and in myself. He is with us.
I had a bass tournament on Lake Travis in 2016. Caught nearly a limit and at the end of the tournament, on my last cast, I looked up to see Stonehenge North way up on the mountain. I caught my biggest bass out of Travis, nearly 5lbs! During the fight, I was yelling thanks Dad, thanks Dad, thanks Dad! Man, he is missed. I know I will see him again. I can't wait, but for now, his memory will be with me forever. Love you Daddy.

Thank you to all of Dick's former students who have entered condolences here. His life as an educator was among his proudest achievements; he talked about all of you often. I neglected to put my former last name in the obituary (obviously not thinking clearly). I taught across the hall from Dick as Pat Teaster. We were together 21 years and married 13.5 of those. We were the worst-kept secret at Dobie High School there for awhile.

Oh Max - and he's told that story a thousand times. Stonehenge North turned out to be everything we ever wanted. It's way too empty without his big personality inside.

Dick & I had a great experience building his house on the hill. It was the first two bath, no bedroom house I'd ever built. :) And the first time I'd ever installed Murphy beds. I enjoy going back over our emails and letters. besttoyoupatti

I had Mr. Pewthers as a teacher during high school. I remember him as being very nice, caring, and obviously enjoyed being a teacher. Prayers to his family on their loss. RIP, Mr. Pewthers.

Although our lives have drifted apart and led us down many journeys, the school days at Consol cannot be forgotten. May God bless your family and be with them thru this troubling time. Class mate of 1964.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of such a wonderful man. My heart goes out to Patti and the entire family, you must all be in disbelief. I can still hear his laugh and am thankful that I was fortunate enough to be his student, Dick and Patti were THE teachers for me, the ones who not only taught us but instilled confidence with intelligence, wit and always with such class!!
My heart goes out to you all.

I am so sorry to hear about his passing. Mr. Pewthers was my favorite teacher. I was in his DECA class in 1987 and 1988. Great guy with funny stories of himself and his boys. I learned alot from him! Praying for all of his family.

I am so very sad to hear of Mr Pewthers passing. He was a true inspiration and very big part of getting me through high school. I was part of the DECA program he gave so much of his personal time to. The last time I was able to spend time with him was at my wedding reception in 1994.
My prayers are with his family & friends.
