MILFORD, DE - Lt. Col. Leonard E. Greenly, U.S. Army retired passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024 at Bayhealth Sussex Campus, Milford. Leo was born in Milford, the son of the late Leslie and Mary (Tharp) Greenly.
He was a 10th generation farmer raising chickens with his late wife Alice. Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 serving during the Vietnam War. He became a decorated helicopter pilot, and received both the Distinguished Flying Cross and a purple heart before retiring at the rank of Major. Leo then enlisted in the Delaware Army - National Guard, and was ordered to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Leo attained the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring in 1991. He then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier, working several years before retiring.
Leo was a life member of the South Bowers Fire Company, serving as Rescue Captain and also in EMS. In his younger years, Leo enjoyed going fishing and crabbing. Leo loved to travel and experience new places, especially traveling to Spain and Hawaii, two of his favorite locations.
In addition to his parents; Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; a son, Calvin Orlando Greenly; and a sister, Winnifred Eisenbrey.
He is survived by four daughters, Linda Mosher, Mary Anne Brantley and her husband Ronald, Alice Greenly, and Donna Greenly and her fiance' Rick Deputy; one sister, Doris Williams; four grandchildren, Laura Fila, Jenny Garry, Josh Gifford, and Weston Price; and two great grandchildren, Alyssa and Jacob Garry.
A viewing will be held from 1 - 2 pm on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where services will be held at 2 pm. Burial with military honors will be held at Milford Community Cemetery, Milford.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Modern Maturity Center Meals on Wheels program, 1121 Forrest Ave, Dover, DE 19904 and write Meals on Wheels on the memo line.
