Dorothy Weir Obituary

Dorothy Redden Weir, age 104, passed away Monday, Sept. 5, 2022 at the Brown County Health and Living Community. Born April 16, 1918 in Morocco, Indiana to James Bingham Redden and Hazel Law. She graduated valedictorian and was awarded the Newton County Scholarship to Indiana University, a campus she had never visited before. Dorothy graduated I.U. in 1940 with a B.S. in education. She was hired as a gin tester by Seagrams at their Louisville facility and later worked in the Wilkie-For-President headquarters. Later Dorothy worked for DuPont in Charleston, Indiana and then Kankakee, Illinois. That's where she got re-acquainted with Bob, another I.U. grad, and in 1943 they were married. They moved to Woodbury, New Jersey and later Pitman, New Jersey, where they lived for 24 years.

Dorothy worked for the Red Cross as a nurse's aide during World War II in hospitals and at Ft. Dix, NJ. She and Bob were instrumental in founding the Gloucester County Unit of the New Jersey Association for Retarded Children, now ARC Gloucester. Dorothy served as a volunteer for the Training Class operated in the Pitman Presbyterian Church. She was also active in the D.A.R. Red Bank Chapter in NJ, American Association of University Women, and as a member of the Pitman Presbyterian Church.

Dorothy and Bob moved to Nashville, Indiana in 1974. In Nashville, Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Friends of the Library, Art Gallery and Art Guild, ARC of Brown County, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Indiana Society of Indiana Pioneers, Literary Club, Habitat for Humanity of Brown County, OWL Club of Morocco, Indiana and a life member of the Indiana University Alumni.

Dorothy loved to travel and camp, having visited all 50 states and many countries. She was also an avid reader.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Robert (2002), a daughter, Ann (1967) and a son, Robert Jr. (1994) married to Merry Hope Meloy. She is survived by daughters, Mary Weir (Paris, KY) and Rebecca Weir Roesler (Bruce-Glassboro, NJ); three grandchildren, Martha Roesler (Key Largo, FL), Brian Roesler (Martha's Vineyard, MA) and Amy Scott (Ben Scott- Virginia Beach, VA) and two great-grandchildren, Sarah Law and Nicholas Robert.

Dorothy made a difference in this world in a quiet, effective manner. Her life displayed courage and serenity. Dorothy had the capacity to engage challenging circumstances and to learn from them.

There will be no services at this time. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Nashville or to the Brown County Public Library.
