Manlius - Marcus Rollin Krug, 72, passed away at his home in Manlius, IL on Thursday, July 27, 2023.
Marcus had several nicknames, Mark, Captain or Porky, but whatever you called him, be sure to call him friend. Born in Manlius, IL on February 15, 1951 to the late Oswald Forrest and Marjorie Anna (Woods) Krug. He attended Manlius grade and high school and eventually received his GED in 1972.
He joined the United States Army in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1976. He was a member of the American Legion, Manlius Sportsman Club and NRA.
Mark met Mary Moore in the early 2000. They created a life together and enjoyed going on road trips and adventures. They enjoyed fishing and visiting local ponds, rivers and canals. Mark and Mary loved to travel and find new adventures. The road always led them back home to Manlius. They shared almost 20 years together before Mary's untimely passing on September 19, 2022.
He started working as a deckhand on barges as a teen on the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Eventually earning his stripes as Barge Captain and retired from Illinois Marine Towing in 2018. He was a Captain for 40 plus years. His schedule consisted of 30 days on and 15 days off and he was excited for his retirement. As much as he loved his job and being a Captain, he couldn't wait to stop living out of a bag.
When Mark was younger, he enjoyed sitting at the barber shop in Manlius talking to the barber Dick Fordham. He loved watching Gunsmoke and fishing. One of his favorite things to do was get in his car and visit his favorite watering holes and bartenders. He loved to cook and was very good at it. Mark would do a wild game breakfast and dinner at the Sportsman Club, as well as assist with the "Turkey Nut Fry" at the Way Station in Manlius. He was an avid reader and really enjoyed sitting down with a good book. He was an outdoorsman through and through. He was very caring and would help anyone in need and his very dry sense of humor was part of his charm. His friends couldn't wait for his 15 days off to hear some of his great stories and adventures on the barge.
Surviving Mark are two nephews, Aaron Dulberger of Palatine, IL, and Todd Krug of Princeton, IL; one niece, Dawn Krug.
Preceded in death by his parents, Oswald and Marjorie Krug, his significant other Mary Moore, two brothers, George Krug and Gorden Krug as well as one sister, Dorothy Dulberger.
