DELAND - Gunther Gerhard Ludewig, 93, passed away Jan. 1, 2025, at Wellsprings Retirement Community in Apopka. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel. Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Gunther was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Manhattan, New York, and moved to DeLand in 1973 from Columbus, Mississippi.
He was a public health occupational medicine specialist in the U.S. Air Force. During his 21 years in the USAF, Gunther served in many locations, including England, Germany, Canada, and multiple locations throughout the United States.
Gunther also loved to serve his community, as he loved being a Shriner, having volunteered for many roles such as Circus Dad, Moped Motor Core, and transporting children in need to the Tampa Shriners Hospital on many occasions.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, to whom he was married for 58 years prior to her passing in February 2018. Survivors include his sons, Michael Ludewig (Elaine) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Steven Ludewig (Wen) of Princeton, New Jersey, John Ludewig of St. Petersburg, Thomas Ludewig (Joya) of Woodbridge, Illinois, William Ludewig (Susan) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and David Ludewig (Ellen) of DeLand; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
