Gerald L. "Jerry" Germer, 78 years of age, of Plymouth, Neb., passed away at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln on Wednesday afternoon, April 30, 2008. He was born on August 5, 1929, in Beatrice, to Carl W. and Alma K. (Merklinger) Germer.
Jerry lived in the Beatrice and Plymouth areas most of his life. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953. Jerry married Eldora E. Jung on April 29, 1951, in Jansen, Neb. Jerry was an active member of the Peace United Methodist Church in Plymouth, lifetime member of the American Legion in Lincoln, and also the VFW in Beatrice. He enjoyed going to his grandchildren's various activities, restoring and collecting antique tractors, square dancing, traveling, reading and history.
Survivors include his wife, Eldora E. Germer; 2 daughters, Lorie Headrick and husband Dennis of Plymouth, Neb., and Carol Dahl of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Sam Germer and wife Tish of Ogden, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Jana Dux and husband Mike, Kristen Cable and husband Ryan, Brandon Dahl, Michaela Dahl, Caitlin Germer, Chelsea Germer and Avery Germer; 2 sisters, Sharon Bliss and husband Cecil, and Gwenith Fras, all of Lincoln, Neb.; 2 sisters-in-law, Louise Meyer and husband Martin of Holyoke, Colo., and Linda Preisendorf and husband Ronald of Greeley, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, in the Peace United Methodist Church in Plymouth, Neb., with the Rev. Katherine Bullard officiating. Cremation has taken place. There will be a register book available to sign at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, Sixth and Washington streets, Beatrice, on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church. A memorial has been established to the families' choice with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. Messages of condolence can be sent to: [email protected]. They will be forwarded to the family.
