Harriet P. Garton
Harriet P. Garton, 94, Beatrice, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Wymore Good Samaritan Center. She was born at home in rural Jefferson County Nebraska on Sept. 12, 1922 to Paul and Katherine Thomas. Harriet was raised south of Harbine, graduated from Diller High School in 1940. She married Orville Garton on Jan. 13, 1941 at the judge's office in Wilber. They lived in Santa Monica, Calif., from 1942 to 1946, when they moved back to Ellis. After she raised her family, Harriet went to work at the Beatrice State Developmental Center for 15 years until she retired. She was a member of the Ellis United Methodist Church, the ladies aide, and enjoyed her prayer partners there. Harriet enjoyed gardening, Bingo, dances, going on bus trips to Branson, Mo., friends and family.
Survivors include children, Russell Garton of Beatrice, Kathryn Monfelt of Beatrice, Roger Garton of Diller, Frank Garton of Beatrice, Steve Garton and wife Pam of Beatrice, and Richard Garton of Ellis; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gladys Moore of Apple Valley, Calif., and Opal Garton of Auburn, Calif.; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Katherine Thomas; husband Orville; daughter-in-law, Harriet E. Garton; great-grandson, Beau Waltke.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Ellis United Methodist Church with Pastor Curt Magelky officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice. The body will lie in state 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Harman-Wright Mortuary, Beatrice. A memorial is established to the Ellis United Methodist Church or family's choice with the mortuary in charge.
