Joey J. Schmidt, 52, of Holmesville, passed away at the Beatrice Community Hospital Friday afternoon, Nov. 14, 2014 following a short battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 1, 1961 in Beatrice to Jurgen (Art) and Shirley (Behrends) Schmidt, and was a 1980 graduate of Beatrice High School.
Joey and Barbara Weast were married on Feb. 26, 1999. He had been employed at American Tool in Beatrice for 10 years, and had been a maintenance technician at Exmark Manufacturing in Beatrice for ten years. He had lived in the Pickrell and Beatrice areas his entire life. Joey enjoyed hunting, working on his tractor and with his cattle, watching sports (especially football, basketball and racing) and carpentry.
Survivors include his wife Barbara; stepson Eddie Brooks and wife Stephanie of Jonesboro, Tenn.; step-grandchildren Chase and Austin Brooks; brother Randy Schmidt and wife DeeAnn of Filley and their children Trenton and Tanner Schmidt; sister Lori Dyne and her children Jessica and Raymond Dyne of Beatrice; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and members of Barb's family including her brothers John Weast and wife Dana and Jim Weast and wife Lavelle, all of Oklahoma; her aunt and uncle Nancy and Leroy Reavis of Oklahoma; and her cousin Tamara Christiansen and husband Tony of Independence, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jurgen (Art) and Shirley (Behrends) Schmidt; sister Patsy Sue Schmidt; and brother-in-law Ray Dyne Jr.
Private family memorial services will be held at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. There will be no viewing or visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial has been established to the family's choice with the funeral home in charge.
