Marvin R. Halvorsen, 87, of Syracuse, passed away on Feb. 23, 2017 at Bryan Medical East Hospital in Lincoln. He was born on Aug. 25, 1929 to Herman Earl and Minnie (Beckard) Halvorsen on a farm north of Unadilla. He graduated from Unadilla High School as the Valedictorian in 1945.
Marvin served in the Army National Guard and farmed north of Unadilla until he was married. On Easter, April 1, 1956, Marvin married Jennie Huttenmaier at American Lutheran Church in Lincoln. They farmed in Adams until they moved to Syracuse in 1960. He loved working on the dairy farm, which he did for over 50 years.
He is survived by his daughter: Janice (Greg) Ritter of Vancouver, Wash.; son: John (Cheryl) Halvorsen of Syracuse; grandson: Aaron Halvorsen of Lincoln; step-granddaughter – Kayla Ritter of Seaside, Ore.; brother Larry (Rosemarie) Halvorsen of Unadilla; sister-in-law Wilma Halvorsen of Palmyra; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty (Hans) Rath of Omaha; brother-in-law Carl Huttenmaier Jr. of Phoenix, AZ.; also many nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Earl Halvorsen Jr, John Halvorsen, and Virgil Halvorsen; and sister Marie Heather.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Syracuse. Burial will follow at Park Hill Cemetery. Lunch will be served following the service. Visitation will be held at Luther Memorial Church one hour before the service from 1-2 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Syracuse Area Churches Food Pantry.
