Mary Hubbard Obituary

Mary Alta "Sandy" Hubbard, 95, of Fairfield, Calf., formerly of Beatrice, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014. She is now in the loving arms of God.

Mary, fondly called Sandy, was a loving mother with a strong faith. Grandma Sandy or Grammy was loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her and will live on in our hearts. Her legacy is a closely bonded family whose members will always honor her memory. We are thankful for having her in our world. Born Dec. 6, 1918, she spent her childhood in Cheney, Union Center, Siloam Springs, Ark., and Wymore, where she graduated from high school in 1936. Sandy's family then moved to Beatrice, where she met and married Malvern Hubbard in May 1937. She then lived for 64 years in Beatrice. Sandy was a homemaker most of her life. In Beatrice, she was a member of First Christian Church (DOC) and several church circles, women's fellowship, AARP, and was a member and an officer in the Gage County Saddle Club. She led a Girl Scout Brownie troop for two years, worked in the PTA for several years, was employed at Montgomery Ward Credit Department for four years and employed at the Gage County Treasurer's Office for eight years. Five years after her husband died, Sandy moved to Albuquerque, N.M., to live with her daughter, Gail and her family and then in 2006, she moved to Suisun City, Calif., to be near her son, Leland and his family. She enjoyed traveling, hiking and camping throughout the United States. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, ceramics, making quilts, sewing, collecting and using recipes, reading and crocheting. She learned to enjoy bicycling after she was 65 years old and learned to use her computer when she was 80.

Survivors include her daughter, Gail Velez of Albuquerque, N.M., four sons, Vern Hubbard of Rock River, Wyo., Leland Hubbard and wife Cheryl of Fairfield, Calf., Leonard "Jack" Hubbard of Casper Wyo., and Ross Hubbard and wife Pamela of Fort Fairfield, Maine; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James A and Myrtle M.G. Ellis Johnson, her husband, Malvern M. (Hub) Hubbard, three brothers, Clarence, Gilbert and Arnold Johnson, sister, Vera Arlene Winslow, son-in-law Joseph Velez and an infant granddaughter, Kimberly Hubbard.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice, with Rev. David A. Bigley, officiating. Burial will be at the Wymore Cemetery of Wymore. A memorial has been established to the American Diabetes Association. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home from 8 a.m. Thursday until time of service on Friday. A guestbook for signatures and messages of condolence is available online at www.foxfuneralhome.net. Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice is in charge of the arrangements.
