Carolyn Cox Obituary

1921 - 2016 Carolyn Samford Cox passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 21, in Austin. Born in Orange, Texas October 26, 1921, to William and Daisy (Seastrunk) Rollins, Carolyn grew up in Beaumont, and graduated from Beaumont High School, and married Fred Dewey Catrett, II, also of Beaumont. Carolyn was a local Beaumont artist, painting many portraits and landscapes. A life-time Methodist, she loved singing in the choir at Trinity Methodist Church in Beaumont, where she met and married Richard Royalston (Sam) Samford. Along with her mother Daisy, they moved to Wildwood, where Carolyn taught china painting and was an active member of the Wildwood Village Mills Methodist Church. Carolyn, Sam, and Daisy later moved to Utah, and then California and back to Texas again in order to be near their growing family with its three young granddaughters. After Sam's death, she moved back to her beloved Wildwood, and continued teaching art classes. She married Wilton Cox, and they were devoted members of the Wildwood Village Mills Methodist Church, enjoying gardening together and going dancing. In recent years she lived near family in Austin. She is preceded in death by her husband Wilton Cox, and her son Fred Dewey (Rick) Catrett, III. She is survived by her granddaughters, Marie Catrett of Austin, Jessica Catrett of Houston, and Nicole Catrett of El Cerrito, California, and by her great grandchildren Julia Holden of Austin, Chloe Allen of Houston, and Collin Womack of Houston. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 12th, at 11 am at Berkeley United Methodist Church, 2407 Berkeley Ave in Austin.

Mrs Samford was my art teacher at Coy´s Day School in Beaumont in the early 60s and a family friend through church. My mother Dorothy commissioned her to paint two scenes important to my mother which she still displays in her home: the old tree near mom´s school and the Pioneer Wiman statue at Texas State College for Women.
I think of Mrs Samford every time I visit mom and see her work that lets our family enjoy these memories.
