May the Lord wrap his loving arms around you and hold you tight. It was a very nice pleasure to have known you and share the love of the Lord with you. You will be missed dearly. When we meet again I will see you on that 50 yard line and you will always be the "steel curtain". God Bless you and will be missed.

I never knew Ernie but I grew up in Newton and lived away from there for the last 35 years. But I was proud to know Ernie was not only a great athlete but also a person who wanted to help those who needed help in my old hometown.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Holmes family. I knew "Fats", as we lovingly called, as a young girl growing up in Newton, and my brother, Charley Sylvester, and Ernie were very good friends. Charley passed from leukemia in August of 1999 at the age of 48, but he would always tell me when he had paid "Fats" Holmes a visit, even during his struggle with leukemia. I remember the times his father, Mr. Buddy, would come over to Newton to do work across the road from us (Manuel Sylvester's home) and "Fats" and his brother Robert would be with him. We spent many moments chatting and "Fats" and Charley would go off into the woods with BB guns or shoot marbles. I have not seen "Fats" since my high school years at old Kerr High School, but I knew some of his family well, and I closely followed his football career, especially after marrying a man from Pittsburgh. I was always proud of him, and according to what I have read recently, he made the community of Newton, Jasper and surrounding areas proud. May God comfort the Holmes family in this time or sadness.

I just learned of Ernie Holmes' death. It's a sad day for Ernie's family and for the Steeler Nation. Let it be known that for two or three seasons, Ernie Holmes was in a class by himself. Yes, Joe Greene and other members of the Steel Curtain may have played longer and earned their just due, but for a short time there, no one was tougher and no one hit harder than Ernie Holmes. As a little boy, I can remember accompanying my father to Steeler training camp. We had VIP access, so I got as close to the action as I dared. I'll never forget watching LC, Joe, Dwight and the rest of them hit the tackling sleds. Ernie didn't just hit the sled lower and harder, he hit it so much harder that he made the others look bad. I'll never forget that. It wasn't even close. If they play football in Ernie's heaven, then his opposition will know they've landed in hell.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
