James B. Alvis

1914 - 2016 James B. Alvis, 101, of Baytown, was born July 11, 1914 in San Augustine, TX and passed away Sunday April 24, 2016 in Houston. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Baytown and Highlands Bridge Clubs and the Exxon Annuitants. James was raised in Browndell and Bessmay in East Texas. After graduating from High School, James traveled all over the United States selling the Gentleman's Quarterly door to door. In 1937 he secured a job with Humble Oil and Refining Company in Houston and in 1938 moved to Baytown to work in the Humble (Exxon) refinery. He resided in Baytown from that time until his death. James was preceded in death by his wife Olga Bernice Stringer Alvis; his parents, Zack Alvis and Ada E. Strother; brothers, Ross E. Alvis, Lee Roy Alvis: and sister Masel Alvis Griffin. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sue Beth Alvis of Austin and Joel and Diane Alvis of Spring; grandchildren, James (Andy) Alvis of The Woodlands, Paul Alvis and wife Gina of Cedar Park, Jeffery Alvis M.D. and wife Tiffany of Prosper, and Sara B. Daly of Falls Church, VA, 7 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. His family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Friday, April 29, 2016, from 5:00pm until 7:00p.m. Funeral Services will be Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with graveside service to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Jasper, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions may be made to the Lee College Wellness Center, 200 Lee College Dr., Baytown, TX 77522, First Baptist Church Baytown, 505 Rollingbrook Dr., Baytown, TX 77521 or the charity of one's choice.
