JAMES ROBERT "JIM BOB" HELDUSER

JAMES HELDUSER Obituary

James Robert Jim Bob Helduser, 52, of College Station went to be with His Lord and Savior on Friday, February 26, 2010. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. A memorial celebration will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Grace Bible Church, located at 700 Anderson St. in College Station. A private family burial will be at Aggie Field of Honor in Memorial Cemetery of College Station. Dr. Jimmy Cobb of San Marcos, Texas, will officiate. Born February 27, 1957, in Groves, Texas, Jim Bob was the only child of Jim (Steed) and Robert Edward Helduser. He attended First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ in Port Arthur and was an Eagle Scout by age 13. An exceptional junior golfer, Jim Bob was also a three-sport athlete at Port-Neches Groves High School where he played on the PNG Indians state semi-finalist football team. He graduated with highest honors in 1975. He attended Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, where he played on the squad that captured the 1975 NAIA championship. Jim Bob graduated summa cum laude in May 1979 with a degree in biology. He would later earn a master's degree in educational administration from Texas State University. Jim Bob began his football coaching career at Rice University, where he coached from 1979 to 1984. He spent the next 11 seasons at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he coached almost every position before assuming head coaching responsibilities from 1992 to 1996. Other collegiate coaching jobs included Texas Christian University (1998 to 2000), the University of Alabama (2001 to 2002), and Texas A&M University (2003 to 2007). His offensive lines were continually ranked in the top 10 in the nation. High school coaching jobs included Alief-Elsik High School, Lake Travis High School and Bryan High School, where he retired after the 2009 Viking football season. A man of great integrity, Jim Bob was best known for his exceptional character and his passion for coaching football. It is not uncommon to hear people describe Jim Bob as the finest man I've ever known. He was honest and fair, humble but self-confident, had an incredible work ethic, and was dedicated to mentoring young athletes. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, and his stepfather, Charles Everett Sr. Survivors include his mother, Jim Everett of Bryan, formerly of Groves; wife of more than 23 years, Janet; son and daughter-in-law, Brant and Noelle Helduser of Houston; daughters, Kylene and Jenna Helduser of College Station; two grandchildren, Ashton and Hailey Helduser; step-siblings, Charles Everett of Virginia, Debbie Everett of New York and Caroline Meyer of George West, Texas; sister-in-law, Linda Wiegman of Austin; and in-laws, Don and Dorothy Wiegman of San Antonio. Honorary pallbearers for the memorial celebration will be the offensive linemen for the Bryan High School Viking varsity football team, Colton Barnes, Ryan Elkins, Alex Mendez, Logan Toomer and Daniel Wright. Arrangements are entrusted to Hillier Funeral Home, 2301 E. 29th St., Bryan, TX 77802, 979-822-1571. Please view and sign the guestbookwww.hillierfuneralhome.com

As a former student and football player of SW Texas State, I asked coach his name and he said, Jim Bob Helduser. I thought he was joking. Coach Helduser left a profound impression upon me. When asked my name, I jokingly say, Jim Bob Helduser and watching others with incredulous looks on their faces. You've been in my heart since first meeting. RIP
Coach.

To the family of Jim Bob, my heart goes out to you. I always told people about a player that had the perfect LB name...Jim Bob Helduser. I enjoyed watching his success in the coaching ranks. I hope he's already caught up with Coach Jim Wacker, his coach at TLU. They are probably talking talking football and the NAIA National Championship Team of 1975. God Bless You and Give You Peace.

Janet and family,
My heart goes out to you and your family. Jim Bob is a great example of what a husband, father, grandfather, and friend should be. He will be missed by so many but his legacy will be the Christian love and fellowship he shared with everyone he met. May God bless you and give you peace.

As a fellow PNG classmate and Aggie please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Jim Bob.

I always got a kick seeing him on the sidelines at TAMU and thought he would make the perfect head coach at Aggieland if given the chance, may he rest in peace.

God chooses to heal or not to heal for His own reasons. He cannot love us any more or less than He does at this moment. Whether He chooses to heal or take us home, His love remains constant.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate "Jim Bob's" life well lived.

We will continue to keep you all in our prayers.

I was lucky enough to spend two years working with Coach Helduser while I was at TCU. There was never a day that went by that I didn't learn something from him...and most of what I learned was not about football but more so about how to treat people and how to make sure to do things the right way. It is because of the lessons he taught me and the impact that I saw him have on young men's lives on a daily basis that I decided to become a coach myself. The impact that he has had on my life is not easliy put into words but I know that I would not be where I am today if it weren't for him.

We have lost a great coach and an even better person....my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
