Melba Phelps Obituary

Melba Phelps, 78, of Bandera, passed away on October 21, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in Beaumont, Texas to Albert & Pearl Brown Smith on December 5, 1931. On December 25, 1949 she married T.R. Phelps in Beaumont, TX. While in Beaumont, Mrs. Phelps played a very active role in her childrens' education, serving as P.T.A. President twice, as well as several other organizations. She was also a member of the Tyrrell Park Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She was an avid gardener, an excellent seamstress, and loved to hunt and fish. She will be remembered as a person with an impeccable work ethic. She is survived by her husband T. R. Phelps of Bandera; 2 daughters, Karon McCullough and husband, John of Pearl, Mississippi, and Fonda Rae Chesson and husband Roy, of Bandera ; son, Douglas Phelps and wife Nancy of Stanley, North Carolina; sister, Louise Will of Beaumont, Texas; grandchildren, James McCullough, Kirsten Cope, Paul McCullough, Travis Chesson, Jeb Chesson, Kasi Chesson, Lucas Phelps, Sara Mirabella, Samuel Phelps, Clare Womack and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, October 24, 2010 at Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera, with the Pastor Bob Morris officiating. Interment followed at Bandera Cemetery. Pallbearers were James McCullough, Paul McCullough, Travis Chesson, Jeb Chesson, Robby Mirabella and Gene Dunnam. Honorary pallbearers are Samuel Phelps, Charles Carpenter and Lucas Phelps.
