Mike Gerstner Obituary

Mike Gerstner, 82, of Beaumont, died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont. A native of Chozanow, Poland, he was brought to Beaumont in 1951 by the Beaumont Jewish Federation. A Holocaust survivor, he was liberated from the Buchenwald concentration camp on April 11, 1945. He was first placed in a death camp in 1939 when he was 14. Shortly after World War II began in Europe, he and his family were deported to a ghetto and then later to Auschwitz, where his mother, brother, and grandmother died in the gas chamber. His sister died of malnutrition only days after she was liberated from Bergen Belsen. He and his father performed hard labor for the Germans and were sent to several camps and finally Buchenwald, one of the largest of the camps, where they became separated. It was only after coming to Beaumont that he found out his father was alive and living in Israel, where Mike visited him in 1961 - one of the happiest moments of his life. He initially worked as a baker for Rao's and then as a salesman for a number of men's clothiers in the area and ultimately retired from Norman's Men's Clothing. Survivors include his extended family, Marie Roach and her children, Lisa M. Roach and Lamar A. Roach, Jr.; and friends and neighbors. Graveside service will be 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 7, 2007 at Kol Israel Cemetery under the direction of Broussard's, 2000 McFaddin, Beaumont. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Emanuel, 1120 Broadway, Beaumont, Texas 77701. Complete and updated information may be viewed at www.broussardsmortuary.com.

Michael was living history here in Southeast Texas, and I so enjoyed going into his home with my friend who interviewed him for a story for the newspaper.

Many people having gone through what Michael had would harbor ill and bitter feelings, but he had risen above that and enjoyed life every day he lived it. I often saw him about the area, at a restaurant or at the pharmacy and looked forward to his warm and witty greeting and a litlte song and dance.

Go rest high on the mountain and enjoy the reward of your labor, dear Michael.

Mr. Gerstner lived every moment of his life telling everyone he met the story of his survival of the worst tragedy in modern history. He bravely bore witness to hundreds -- maybe thousands -- of Southeast Texas children. The passing of the sole Holocaust survivor in Southeast Texas marks the end of an era. May we never forget. This is for you, Mr. Gerstner.

Mike was always a gentleman, always had that big smile on his face, and through his educational efforts taught school kids FIRSTHAND about history they otherwise would only have read about. I told my daughter last evening that Mike had passed away; she knew immediately who I was talking about. He will be missed.

Did not ever formally meet Mr. Mike, only saw him at Luby's Cafeteria. He was always singing and doing alittle dance. He was always polite.

We will miss you dancing in the street. We always enjoyed your positive attitude toward LIFE. You said You had lived in HELL and now you were in HEAVEN. We truly believe that.
