James R. Turner Sr.

James Ray Turner, Sr., 90 of Bedford passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born April 1, 1925, in Bedford County, a son of the late Charles T. Turner and Docia C. Turner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Costoline Ayers Turner as well as his brothers, Earl, Charles, Frank, Harry and Victor and sisters, Russie, Pauline and Ruby. Ray was a lifetime member of Pecks Baptist Church where he was a deacon, a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the choir. He was also an honorary lifetime member of Bedford County Farm Bureau, past director of Farm Credit, past member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors and past chairmen of Bedford Southern States Cooperative. He is survived by his daughter, Pat Goode and husband, Vernon; two sons, James R. Turner, Jr., and wife, Mary, Billy W. Turner and wife, Rita; sisters-in-law, Margaret Turner, Helen S. Turner, Jacqueline G. Turner; brothers-in-law, A. P. Ayers, Goggin C. Hale; grandchildren, Richard Goode and wife, Tracy, Traci Bratton and husband, Steve, James R. Turner III and wife, Tomi Leah, Tommy Turner and wife, Wendy; Wayne Turner & friend, Jesse Hines; great grandchildren, Robert and Vaniessa Turner, Codey Turner, Sam and Rachel Goode, Alex and Kaitlynn Bratton, Aaron Turner, Jackson and Olivia Turner and lots of other wonderful family members. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Pecks Baptist Church, 1020 Pecks Road, Bedford, VA 24523 or Gideons International, Bedford County Camp, P. O. Box 791 Bedford, VA 24523. A funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 at 11 AM at Pecks Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Sheehan, Rev. Wayne Murphy and Sam Williams officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
