Fairview Heights, Illinois - George A. Lanxon, age 93, of Fairview Heights, IL, born on July 23, 1932, in East St. Louis, IL, died on Sunday, February 8, 2026, under hospice care.

George was a United States Army Korean War Veteran. He originally sold steel pilings for L.B. Foster Company in St. Louis, MO. He later formed his own business, George A. Lanxon Piling Sales, Inc., supplying steel pilings for bridge construction until recent years. He served in many capacities within the city, the community and was Mayor for the City of Fairview Heights from 1979 to 1995. He was former chairman of the city's Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments, and was instrumental in the formation of the 911 Emergency System. George was a charter member of the Fairview Heights Rotary Club and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, Salvation Army Board, and Backstoppers, to name a few organizations. So many people loved George for being a great man with his leadership of bringing people together, and for his friendship. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the city he loved. George always opened in his talks, "Folks, it's a beautiful day in Fairview Heights."

George was preceded in death by his parents, George N. and Hazel, nee Rujawitz Lanxon; and his sister, Joan (Tom) Lonergan.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. "Bobbie" Lanxon, nee Gavett; his children, Michael (Judith) Lanxon of Belleville, IL, Julie Gaskin of Fairview Heights, IL, and Kevin Lanxon of Fairview Heights, IL; his 7 grandchildren, Aaron (Carly) Marmon, Anthony Marmon, Tyler (Erica) Marmon, Alisha Marmon, Christopher Lanxon, Danielle (Dan) Voelkel, and Michael L. Sad to see George come to the end of his earthly journey. He served his country and the citizens of Fairview Heights with commitment. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

My sympathy to Bobbie and the family. George was a tennent in my family's building on Lincoln Trail for many years. He and Bobbie were very sweet people
and as usual very hard workers.
They both loved their family and the city of Fairview Heights. He will be missed.

Mayor Lanxon was one of the kindest people who was the greatest ambassador the city of Fairview Heights may have ever seen. I was lucky enough to be a summer college employee in the Public Works Department and later a Police Officer during his tenure as Mayor. He always had the best interest of the city, its citizens and employees as a top priority. He will truly be missed.

I was sorry to see that George passed away. He was the perfect example of a gentleman. We loved seeing him at Salute to the Masters for years. He was a great help to me over the years as a piling specialist. You could always count on him. His word was his bond as they used to say. We are sorry to say that we are out of town next week.
George and Bobbi were the perfect couple, always with a smile and a welcome. Sorry for all of our loss.

I had the distinct pleasure to serve with George for many terms as a colleague while a member of the Board of Fire & Police Commissioners. He has left countless footprints in Fairview Heights and his memory will endure for many years. Both he and Bobbi are two the kindest people that Karen and I will remember fondly for many years. He absolutely loved his city and during his terms as Mayor, he would drive the streets most every weekend for sure to observe that city services were functioning properly.

I had the pleasure of working for and with George when he was Mayor. Serving as a police officer and later as Police Chief I worked closely with him during his entire career as Mayor. Under his leadership, Fairview Heights developed into one of leading cities in Southern Illinois. He was a perpetual Ambassador for our City and worked hard with his fellow elected officials to see that Fairview Heights was a great place to live and to visit. George was very proud of his involvement with the Police Dept. and proud of each member of the police Dept.! He did everything in his power to see that the Police Department had everything we needed to bring professional Law Enforcement to our Citizens. George bled and breathed Fairview Heights, and everyone in our Region of Southwestern Illinois benefited from his leadership in working as Chairman of the 911 board, supporter of Greater St. Louis Backstoppers, and the St.Louis Major Case Squad. George was a kind and gentle man and will always be remembered as a Gentleman"s Gentleman. He will be missed!
