Joseph Asperger

Joseph J. Asperger, 91, of Granite City, Ill., born February 9, 1925 in Granite City, Ill., passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at home.

Mr. Asperger was a graduate of St. Mary's School and Madison High School. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1943 to 1946. He received his teaching degree in 1950 from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. The first two years of his teaching career were at Catholic High School (Laboure). In 1954 he began teaching in the Madison, Ill., public school system at Madison High School, where he coached for 15 years, Madison Jr. High School, Louis Baer and Madison Middle School, retiring in January 1984 as a highly respected and loved teacher. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Boosters Club, Knights of Columbus, Amvets Post 204, and Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 222. He also served as a Venice Township Trustee and a Police Commissioner for the City of Madison, Ill.

Mr. Asperger was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Bernadine,nee Varley, Asperger; parents, Nickolas and Katie Asperger; two brothers, his twin, Steve and Nick Asperger; and sister, Catherine Planitz.

Surviving are his sons, Richard (Stacy) Asperger, Santa Fe, New Mexico and Charles M. (Debbie) Asperger, Granite City, Ill.; grandchildren, Nicholas and Colin Fischer, Aaron and Justin Asperger and Ashley Ambuel; and great-grandchildren, Rylan Fischer and Noah Ambuel.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Boosters Club.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Davis Funeral Home, 2060 Cleveland Blvd., Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: A rosary service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at the funeral home, led by Sister Jacklyn Pritchard. Interment and military honors will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill.
