Madison Garrett Sr.
Madison W. "Slugger" Garrett Sr., 80, born Sept. 24, 1922, in Madison, Ill., died Friday, June 27, 2003, in Edwardsville, Ill.
Mr. Garrett owned and operated businesses in Venice, Madison and Brooklyn, Ill., areas for 57 years. He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Madison, Ill. Slugger was a kind-hearted and generous person who loved music and people. He attended Dunbar grade school and high schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by his parents, Cassius and Katie, nee Brown Garrett; and seven brothers and sisters.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 57 years, Medora, nee Phillips, Garrett, whom he married in May 1946; eight children, Phyllis (Harvey) Haynes of Madison, Ill., Sharon (Lennil) Johnson of Edwardsville, Ill., Felicia (John) Garrett-Gipson of Venice, Ill., Gay (Verell) Harley of Venice, Ill., Carolyn Johnson Smith of Madison, Ill., Madison (Angie) Garrett Jr., of Madison, Ill., Kevin Garrett of Venice, Ill., and Edwinne Garrett of Madison, Ill.; his sisters, Lolita Jenkins of Madison, Ill., Glodine (Tim Sr.) Bennett of Florida and Betty Jean (Harold Sr.) Williams of Texas; a brother, John Garrett of Madison, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Josephine Garrett of St. Louis, Mo.; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Madison, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Madison, Ill. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2003, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
